God as Love vs God as Judge

I don't see how a God that forgives and forgets your sins, can then turn around and judge you for those forgiven and forgotten sins - does that make sense?

The story I was taught is that sins are supposedly forgiven & forgotten for those who ask (as long as they do so "the right way") but those who don't get judged. That is where our free will comes in, according to this version. I think there are holes you could drive a lorry through, but that's a different argument.
