God in One Sentence

I think this is the right board to ask this question, because I'm interested in seeing a comparison of beliefs about God that people have.

If you only had one sentence to write, how would you define God?

God is..

the Living, The Self-subsisting, Eternal.

If god is part of our existence, it is within the time of our existence. However perhaps god is not part of our existence, if so it need not be within the time of our existence, but that would not mean that it is not within time relative to the scope of it's own existence as that would mean it is without the capacity to change - timelessness would render it static. To claim god as timeless or changeless is to claim god is dead; to claim god as being outside of OUR time is an entirely different matter.
Friend informedignorance,

WE are god in Time, and GOD is beyond Time, and that's the difference between WE and GOD, Thus.. We cannot see our true self while in Time, but we can see our trueself by going beyond Time, and we can also see how it all works. :)

Do you 'know' or believe?
If we are outside of time we cannot see anything either physically or metaphorically, because time is what provides the capacity for change and even mere thought requires change. To be outside of time is to be absolutely static, absolutely changeless, absolutely dead.

God may be outside of the time that permeates our natural existence (this universe) i.e. our time but it must not be outside of all time for change in state to be possible, anything outside of all time it is static, dead.

An 'eternal' god can do things, a 'timeless' god cannot.

Friend informedignorance,

Yes, to be outside of time is to be absolutely static, absolutely changeless, absolutely dead.. but towards this world, And that what is called Salvation, or liberation, or permanent happiness, or permanent peace, or permanent joyous state.

If God would have to take the burden of CHANGINGS (like we people) than there would have been no importance of Salvation etc..

But, the one who has the abilty to go beyond Time and again step back into Time can see and define things physically, and as well as metaphorically with the reason of their existence, But after stepping into Time. Such people are called truely realized people in this world, These people are also known as true saints or guru's in this world.

As such people has such ability, Thus.. such people are more important than God for humankind, because they are the only one who are responsible to keep God alive in this world, Otherwise there would have been no name of God in this world.

An 'eternal' god can do things, a 'timeless' god cannot.
Yes, such people are eternal God who can do things.
Yes, timeless god cannot, because if timeless God would have to take such burden, than there would have been no importance of Salvation, or Moksha, or Permanent libertation in this world :)

IMO there is no true permanent liberation or Moksha in this life..we can try to live a good life..God will judge whether we have done enough to earn Salvation in the hereafter..this life of 80 odd years is only the first chapter of a large book...

Then again you might disagree.. what kind of view do you hold of God?

The one who is looking for salvation after death, means one doesn't need salvation yet :)

God is the name some people give to a peculiar experience that comes about when subject/object perception abruptly ends while some sort of experiencing continues.

Either that, or God is the Great Cosmic Buffoon who created the universe and all that is within it to satisfy the requirements of Her summer break science assignment from Deity Middle School.

And for what do you (sunstone) use the term God ? :)

God is the Almighty Creator of all things, one God in three consubstantial and co-eternal Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Who wants to redeem us from our state of sin and death and return us to a state of communion and love with Him; for this purpose God the Father sent His Son to be incarnate as a human, share in the fullness of our human experience and existence, die, and then rise from the dead.

Change is not a 'burden' it is a asset - it allows the capacity to do things; to experience this 'permanent happiness' requires the capacity to change, because experience requires thought which requires change.

But, the one who has the abilty to go beyond Time and again step back into Time can see and define things physically, and as well as metaphorically with the reason of their existence, But after stepping into Time. As I stated earlier, it might be possible for entities to be outside of OUR time, but to be outside of time entirely (to be changeless) is to be utterly impotent, utter static - anything 'outside' of all time, is unable to 'step into time' (or do anything else for that matter), because that would be a CHANGE.

Indeed the movement from OUR time, to non time itself would logically require a change in the non time scope of existence - thus moving into a non-time scope would either need to create at least a single change in the existence of the contents of that scope (an instant of time denoting the entry into that scope) if not the continued capacity for change within that scope (time as it were) or else it would not be possible in the first place. If such a movement were possible, then in order to then 'step outside' that scope of existence, it would REQUIRE the capacity for change, as it would require the creation of 'before' and 'after' states (as mentioned in the earlier paragraph)

Yes, timeless god cannot, because if timeless God would have to take such burden, than there would have been no importance of Salvation, or Moksha, or Permanent libertation in this world :)
Sorry I just do not understand what you are trying to say

>>>Time is a line drawn on a piece of paper. Spirit is the paper on which the line is drawn <<<:clap Well, how much Time did you took to wrote all this ? :)
Being is timeless and eternal. Becoming is illusory and temporal.

I have to agree with Informed on this one. A being 'outside' of our time would have to exist within a separate dimension of time (or at least something similar) in order for it to do anything. The influence of Time is change. I think a lot of people think about it like Time is propelling us into the future. That's not really the case. 'Future', 'Past' and 'Present' are just human concepts. They don't really describe what time is doing. It's just changing everything. It's isn't changing it 'forward'. How the things influenced by time are changed is determined by a big giant mess of other things. When we think of time going 'backwards' we are really thinking of the entire universe reversing the natural course of events back to a previous state as opposed to time doing anything differently. Going into the future is much different, however since you really only need to separate your experience of time from what it normally would be. Totally different subject of course.

Sorry about that.

Anyway, I don't think of god as outside of time or even outside of this universe. I think of god as a being with plans and plots and schemes and designs. A being with a vision for the future that it is trying to realize. This is a god that needs me for something. I demand at least that from a deity.

God is excuse and reason, motivator of much, creator of...erm...I was going to go nothing, but I'll change that to 'debate'!
