The concept of a higher reality or truth or Being that is worshipped has existed since time began. It is essentially a timeless concept brought to us by the Great Spiritual Beings Who from time to time appear on earth and influence entire civilisations and billions of people for thousands of years. They claim that Their power comes from elsewhere not Themselves.

Even Buddha hinted at an ‘unborn and uncreated’.

Naturalistically speaking, there were some evidence that Neanderthals believed in some sort of spirituality, rituals, etc. Could have been a belief in God or God's.
The evidence for Neanderthal god beliefs is pretty indeterminate; primarily around death rituals of flowers and burial. Something we find among ancient H sapiens cultures who were merely animists.
