GOP: Sink or Swim

You'll just have to see whether the Republicans keep marginalizing themselves by stampeding further and further to the right, or whether they come to their senses after they lose this election.

My prediction: I'm seeing more banging their heads against the same wall with more complaints and blaming the other side, but no actual party changes. I.e. more voting against policies that encourage domestic job production while talking about jobs. Republican voters will still vote Republican even after its proven they can't pull a 51% majority without the independents, and then will be content to continue losing while blaming the independents and democrats, while enjoying the buzz from their top-priced Medicare pills, whining about the good old days.

And with what replace it?
Another pathetic human group?

I see you'd rather be ruled by house cats, then? Or perhaps polar bears? They would certainly have a different attitude on climate change, that's for sure.

I vote White Oak trees. They're neat.

I still have hope that Obama will start stuttering during the debates. Then there is the Biden factor. Laura Ingram said this election should be a gimme. I feel she is right. Romney still has time to move to the center. This election is not over yet, I suspect a few surprises.

Actually, another four years of the same old same old might just do us some good.

One party admits they are SOB's, the other party pretty much just gives lip service.

Seriously, I may need some of these entitlements if we have four more years of the same failed policies. I might just vote Democrat in 2016.

I think that Romney's statements behind closed doors showed his true colors better than anything he's done on the campaign trail. The man is not just an inept campaigner, he has no understanding of why we have welfare programs and retirement insurance. Many of the people in his own base pay no income taxes--e.g. retirees and active soldiers. He doesn't respect the elected leadership in times of crisis, having tried to undermine our president when our embassies were attacked and diplomats killed. He seldom even talks about the soldiers that he wants to command. He makes his VP candidate show him 10 years of tax returns, but he won't show us even complete returns of the one year he has released. Why should we hire him, if he won't hire anyone who refuses to disclose their tax returns? He has switched his position on important issues so many times that even he gets confused as to what his positions are. This man would be a worse disaster than Bush if he managed to win control of the White House.

If Romney moves to the centre he'll be so far left of Obama US voters will die of confusion. Better to have him try to stay wedged in the tiny margin of right wing extremism that the Democrats' conservative platform will allow.

2008 was a land slide, the pendulum swung to the left. Two years later the TEA party showed up and took congress away from Nancy Pelosi. If Obama gets reelected and the economy does not improve, no way in hell will the American people continue following failed policies.

How can his policies be failing if they're being blocked by congress....and what failed policies are you talking about?

He has no control, at this point, over his position. His campaign advisers, republican party and super pac donors are molding a president that represents them. Every time he tries to be him and makes an off script comment they come out and say....'no no no...that's not what Mitt Romney believes'....That's because he's not the man they want him to be. They need to keep tweaking him. Every week we're going to see a new side of Mitt. Next weeks release will be Mittens 4.0.....:)foot:)

Racist! What's wrong with Red Oaks? Don't like trees that can't move into suburbia?

It is true that Romney has little control over his message. As a politician, he is prone to saying whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear and softening or even denying past positions that they don't want him to have. However, the Republican base is fragmented into groups that want very different things--jobs, social change, deficit reduction, etc. They don't all want the same coherent set of policies. Libertarians want to end the drug war and reduce government interference in their lives. Social conservatives (mostly evangelicals) want the government to become more intrusive in people's choices about social behavior. In the modern age, politicians can't pander under the radar. Every time they say something, even when they think it is in private, they run the risk of being recorded. And their carefully-honed message to one group in their base gets out to other groups that are shocked and offended by it. So Romney lurches around like a puppet with different puppeteers trying to control the strings. He is a pandering politician, but he doesn't seem to realize that we live in the age of cellphones with video cameras in them.
