Graves in Islam

I'd like to ask if someone can tell me how graves are supposed to be in Islam? Are we supposed to have unmarked graves, even without gravestones? Or is it okay to have gravestones but not like a tomb, for example in India we have "durgah". Even if no wrong stuff takes place at the durgah is it wrong to just have the tomb?

One can put small indicators to locate the grave etc. Its strictly forbidden to built upon graves.

Chapter 199 Sahih Muslim: COMMANDMENT IN REGARD TO THE LEVELLING OF THE GRAVE

Thumama b. Shafayy reported: When we were with Fadala b. 'Ubaid in the country of the Romans at a place (known as) Rudis, a friend of ours died. Fadala b. 'Ubaid ordered to prepare a grave for him and then it was levelled; and then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) commanding (us) to level the grave.
Book 004, Number 2115:
Abu'l-Hayyaj al-Asadi told that 'Ali (b. Abu Talib) said to him: Should I not send you on the same mission as Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) sent me? Do not leave an image without obliterating it, or a high grave without levelling It. This hadith has been reported by Habib with the same chain of transmitters and he said: (Do not leave) a picture without obliterating it.
Chapter 200: IT IS FORBIDDEN TO PLASTER THE GRAVE OR CONSTRUCTING ANYTHING OVER IT
Book 004, Number 2116:
Jabir said: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) forbade that the graves should be plastered or they be used as sitting places (for the people), or a building should be built over them.

sheikh muqbil rahimahullaah did a paper on the ruling of domes over graves. in it he discusses the prohibition of building domes over graves and the position of graves.

you will be able to find the paper inshaa Allaah if you search for "the ruling of the dome built upon the grave of the messenger of Allaah" or something like that

They are clearly not following Quran and Islam on this issue in particular. Also, tombs has become a business that made people rich. So many Sufis and Shias that are into graveworship, benefit from this, because many people would leave money at the grave thinking it would bring them closer to that person.

Theres articles about numbers and we're talking about lots of money. Add that to the fact, many of the so-called graves, turned out to be false ones, and some individuals who they thought were in that grave, were burried elsewhere and in other countries even in many cases.

In countries where grave worship is prevalent, there would be tens of tombs/graves in small towns even.

Usually, the ones who go to these graves are ignorant, and among the least educated "simple" people. Their leaders tell them that blind following of a Madhab is a must, and who are they supposed to learn the madhab from? From that leader! So in reality its that blind following of leaders who teach them the correct concept of "asking those who know" and "knowing how little you know" but take it to extremes to the point where they stop thinking and just blindly follow.

Those who are against graveworship are commonly vilified and slandered by those who do believe in it and promote it.

Why is it when people make mistakes it automatically goes to this extreme? No Muslim is perfect, yet they're STILL Muslims.

This. I think people need to keep in mind that falsely accusing someone of disbelief is a grave sin and brands the accuser a disbeliever. No person can tell if someone is a believer or not. Leave the judging up to G-d.

People need to seriously think on how great a sin that is before they enter into yet another ridiculous Sunni/Shi'a debate or accuse Sufis, another maddhab, Ahmadi Muslims, and whoever else of kufr.
