greatest commandment

I saw this being discussed in a previous thread...thought it deserved one of it's own.

In your opinion which is the greatest commandment? This doesn't have to come for the Christian or Jewish bible, if your faith has commandments or a concept close to it, which do you think is the most important?

i would have to say the commandment not to stand by while another is in danger (Lev. 19:16)

From a Christian perspective, I think it is summed up in the following Old and New Testament verses. Plus, these are my favorite commandments. Kind of weird that they are both in the same chapter (22) of each book. I just noticed that when I just looked them up.

Joshua 22:5 But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to obey his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul."

Matthew 22:36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[b] 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c] 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

To love your fellow man { which includes women of course } . I think that pretty much sums it all up .

It's difficult to make a choice; I like Todd's choice, but yours is great too kreeden.:)

I always liked what Jesus said... Treat another as you would want to be treated... That guy had some good ideas =P

The first commandment. If you follow it, then the others are easy.
bob if i may be so bold: If you are catholic you believe in only one god--monotheism.. If this is true is it possible to really break the first commandment"

I think the first commandment was written in a culture of polytheism in an effort to stimulate a monotheistic enviroment.

Agreed.

But
do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
is, to me, a despicable Übermensch attitude: I know what's best for everyone, so just you like what I do. I'm a masochist, so I should be out beating all of you.

Using the negative way, like most religions do: Don't do to others what you don't want them to do to you, is more on the safe side.

I have no real favourites. Sikhism comes close by 2/3: It says that you should praise the Name, work honestly in your trade, and help the needy. I feel no need for the first part of those three.

I don't know much about Satanism, but I love this:

Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates.

I very much like, "Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!"

Since I don't have faith in a deity, I don't feel the need to have a "Supreme being" issue commandments concerning the way I live. Instead, I prefer making judgements based on my own experiences, and the laws and pronoucments of the present day society in which I live.

When I looked this passage up, it says --

"Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour; I am the LORD." KJV

"Do not go about spreading slander among your people."
"Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor's life. I am the LORD." NIV

Are you infering this to mean, "not to stand by while another is in danger"?
Or is there a version of (Lev. 19:16) that comes closer to your meaning? If so, could you provide a link? Thanks.

I feel a bit guilty for not having said one of my own; I guess it isnt one of the ten commandments, but I was trying to word something like "Love Nature, and respect all of God's creation" - it's not easy to encapsulate everything in one sentence!:)
