Hi,

I like discussion and argument and I am passionate about truth and reality; and atheism, religion and philosophy and where they intersect with philosophy and science is what I most like to get into. I also care about human civilisation and want to make the world a better place. I believe passionately that a key step forward to building a better future for our global civilisation is freeing our minds from the poison of ancient religions and superstitions. So there you have it, I'm non-religious ;)

More fully, I'd say I'm non-religious, non-superstitious, rationalist, skeptic and a free thinker. I don't like the term atheist, although it's useful I think it's redundant - or ought to be! I don't believe in the existence of human rights, I do believe in human fallibility, freedom of conscience and freedom of speech, also in representative democracy, a sensible balance between private and social interests, preserving and enjoying the natural enviroment, the advancement of science, technology and all legitimate (evidence-based) fields of human enquiry. I want to save the world; I know I will fail and that makes me sad. I will do my best, though.

What ho!

I think beliefs are less important than morality and virtue. You can help if you are atheist or a christian. Religions have caused suffering, but that is quite the web. You sound to me like you're on the right track, even though we have opposing paradigms.

Hi!

Beliefs or, rather, facts are the basis of morality, wouldn't you say? But I think I know what you mean. Being moral is more important than being true to a given set of (morally arbitrary) beliefs.

.......... those are human rights, maybe?

The World is going to survive! No light sabre required. It's humans that are going to come unstuck.

Hi, thanks for all the replies everyone :)

those are human rights, maybe?
Not really - IMO of course!

I'm passionate about lace panties and beer, but perhaps we can find some common ground someday
We have far more common ground than you might think :D

Um, do you come in peace, extraterrestrial friend?
Hmmmm.................... No. Not really! :D I am here to win, because I am right - of course :p

I like the way you think, not clinging to any label, wonderful.
Labels and other words and ideas sometimes carry more baggage than is useful. Eg 'human rights' or 'beliefs'. I once was in a big argument about metaphysics in philosophy, back when the whole topic was very new to me and, after a lenghty analysis of what I thought - vigourously defended, of course - the reply came "oh, you're just a logical positivist" and all further interest was lost. It sounded good of course, I'm logical and a positive thinker by nature (I would like to think....) but I looked it up and (much like islamic faith :p ) it was considered to be absolutely right and completely rational in every respect - apart from being completely and utterly wrong and more or less abandoned as a project by all who had taken part in it. 40 years ago.... Yeah. Labels are dangerous things, even if they serve the convenience of reducing a complex body of thought to a convenient word or phrase.

[Edit] - clearly muslims haven't abandoned islam (yet... :p )
