Unitarian Universalism, Buddhism, Satanism, Taoism, certain varieties of the Abrahamic religions, most varieties of modern paganism...I could go on. Not all organized religion discourages rational thought, and those who propagate such falsehood are no better than the religions that do discourage such.

Not all thoughts are good or productive. You would not want to hear what goes on in my mind sometimes (God must be real patient with me reading my thoughts) and that includes the rational thoughts. It is so easy to rationalize away sin. I did as a youth and regret it now. I think a lot of the restrictiveness falls into the category of church authority which is a diffeent thread. Of course a mature mind can handle questions but the questions only confuse the immature. It is sometimes said that you shouldn't let a new convert anywhere near an experienced Christian.

Yeah . . . I'd like to hear which ones . . .

Tolerate people who asks questions? . . . Maybe . . . But encourage it? . . . No.

The whole idea behind an organized religion is that the work has already been done for you. The tradition has the answers and you just supply the "faith" and your time to participate in the ritual.

and yet the Bible (1 Pet. 3:15) encourages believers to be prepared with gentleness and respect to give an answer to anyone who asks for the reason for the hope that they have. Granted, it is not followed by all believers but it is encouraged in scripture.

Sincerely,

Even the newest converts can do this and usually do with great enthusiasm.
