Excerpt from Wa Po article:
"Writing for the court in a case involving restrictive laws in Chicago and one of its suburbs, Justice Samuel Alito said that the Second Amendment
right "applies equally to the federal government and the states."

Gun rights extended by Supreme Court

It was a squeeker (5-4 ruling), but it appears that the 2nd Amendment has finally joined the incorporation doctrine, ie, applicable to the states also.
Gun rights advocates, let's celebrate!
The rest of you, carp away!
Here is the thread for both.

Why anyone would wish to posess an instrument of death is just beyond me.
It's one thing about America I'll never understand.

They're cool.
They're useful (eg, hunting, self defense).
Because we can.
Because so many would say we cannot.

Sorry friend. I know you're an atheist but this kind of line always reminds me of Moses :D

Which line?

Anyway, I'm sure that whatever fate Heston saw, the same awaits me.
No worries here.

Indeed they are. No argument there. :)

They're useful (eg, hunting, self defense).

Certainly. That does not justify the degree of access that Americans have, though.

Because we can.

Honesty is so disarming (pun unintended).

Because so many would say we cannot.

Of course you can. I don't see why you would want to have so many and so easily, however. It seems to create many more problems than it is worth.

The line that they're useful necessary things that 'THEY' want to take away

Huh? I never knew it was a line. But even though I'm an NRA member, I don't read their political stuff....all old news to me.
I stand by their being useful & that many would take the right away if we slacked off.

There are problems, but every public policy is a matter of intelligent balancing (ideally anyway) of costs & benefits.
Whether it's worth it or not depends upon what want. I prefer that the balance of power not be so much on the side
of government.

It's hard for me to be happy about this when GLBT folks don't have basic human rights.

This is a tiny victory in the battle for liberty.

Yeah, I guess that's it in a nutshell. Are there any reasons for wanting guns that don't sound like they come from the mouth of a surly 16-year-old? For someone with so much life experience, I thought you'd use better reasoning than that of a child.

You're so special!

That's what I thought. Thanks. But does this mean I don't get to get lectured by you anymore about how old you are and how (perceivedly) young I am? I hope I can convince you to keep that up. My days will be worse off without that laugh every now and then.

I look at guns the same as abortion: if you think they're bad, don't get one.

Why is it that so many people who champion liberty in every other arena demand that people who want to use their 2nd Amendment rights justify them?

I think the difference is that those who own guns so regularly use them to deprive others of life

Indeed - rhetoric expressed as opinion tends to eliminate the possibility of understanding. Not a problem if understanding isn't your goal though.
