guru nanak and sacred thread

Young Nanak refuses to take the Hindu religious thread (janao) in a family ceremony. As was tradition for his family, when the child Nanak came of age, a huge ceremony was made in honor of him.
In the Ceremony the priest was to give him a thread that was imbued with mantras. He was supposed to wear this thread his whole life and it would help him meditate. If it ever broke he would get another special thread to put on so he would always have the rememberance of God.

His father called the whole family, their friends and guests to participate in this holy ceremony. It was a very elaborate scene. Nanak always wondered why people do all kinds of ceremonies and rituals when God is inside our hearts. The child Nanak was rebelious and wise, so he refused to put the thread on. He told the priest that he could always remember God without any thread no matter how special it was. "Why don't I meditate on God in my heart? That won't ever break!" He told the priest. Sure enough Guru Nanak did indeed remember God his whole life

guru nanak dev said the following words to preist
ਦਇਆ ਕਪਾਹ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਜਤੁ ਗੰਢੀ ਸਤੁ ਵਟੁ ॥
Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist.

ਏਹੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਹਈ ਤ ਪਾਡੇ ਘਤੁ ॥
This is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me.

ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਨ ਮਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost.

ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੋ ਗਲਿ ਚਲੇ ਪਾਇ ॥
Blessed are those mortal beings, O Nanak, who wear such a thread around their necks

thanx

Gursikh,

That is a wonderful story and shows true wisdom on the part of Guru Nanak. Instead of putting his faith in the material things of this world, he placed his faith in the Almighty, whom rests within every human being...Thanks for relating this story. I would now like to look into this Guru Nanak for which you speak.

What an absolutely beautiful religion of truth and honesty. If there is a Divine Being to be found, it would most certainly reside within the words and teachings of Guru Nanak and the Sikh religion. I cannot believe that I have never researched the teachings of this religion...Gursikh, thanks for bringing this beautiful religion to my attention. I will now be looking for more information concerning it.

i want to share with you the words of one of my friend who found guru nanaks teaching in guru granth sahib ji " by chance " he says

"Wow! Me, 50 years old and never investigated the Sikh way of life as put forth in this wonderful book. I've read and studied the Torah and Talmud, the Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Qur'an, Sufi writings, Bahai teachings, the Christian bible, the words of Dali Lama, the I-Ching, as addition to practicing my grandfather's Lakota ways, yoga, and the spiritual aspects of martial arts. Well, better late than never. I have searched my whole life for a teaching such as found in this book, a way to help me get back to my creator ....

That is exactly how I feel about the Sikh way of life, although I could not have stated to have read or studied all of the above religions and texts that your friend had studied before taking a look at the Sikh faith. I can say with certainty that the Sikh faith is by far one of the most beautiful religions that I have ever come across thus far. It is sad that not too many people know or have even heard of this faith because it seems as though it has a lot to offer the world in which we are living...
