Well, if they actually were eating pets that would be different, they're somebody's pets after all. So aside from the fact that it would be stealing, from the perspective of any warm blooded pet owner it would be something akin to murder-lite.

I'm hesitant to get too deep into something that at this point is just a hypothetical, but realistically speaking if anyone were stealing somebodies pets for food it would no doubt have more to do with laziness and lack of empathy than actual hunger.

I think it would be because of a mental pathology similar to a serial killer resulting from a lifetime growing up and living in a nation with no rule of law. Humans do not do well in such Darwinian environments. We become pathologically cruel, and quite crazy.

Because from my experience if somebody in this country actually is that hungry somebody will be feeding them.

Should we be surprised? They are, afterall, the hefty majority of Americans. You might as well point out Muslims do that heavy lifting in countries where they are a super majority.
Plus it's been shown how much of the giving from Christians is kept in their own community, while atheists are more likely to give to causes where they will not see the results or return on their giving.
