Halal/Kosher Query

Random, I know, but I was curious as to whether horse meat can be considered halal/kosher. Is there any rule in the good books forbidding horse meat?

Horse meat is not kosher. It is not from an animal that chews its cud or has a split hoof.

Oh, pot luck dinner night is awesome. So many old southern recipes mixed with traditional European and Middle Eastern ones as well....

And it's all kosher to boot!

I'd love to get out of town and visit other synagogues; even if it's just to a Reform or Orthodox service every now and them. Raliegh has the closest, and it's close to a two hour drive. I keep telling my wife we need to get a babysitter for the kids and make a weekend of it - go up after work on Friday, and go to services for Shabbat. Then hit the town a little Saturday night. A little shopping for her Sunday, and then back home.

Or, even better would be Charlotte. I hear they have a large, vibrant community (not to mention the only kosher grocery store in the state).

And the food along the way would be a nice treat as well....

in islam any animal that doesn't eat the flesh of other animals is permissible but so long as it hasn't died of any cause other than it having been slaughtered according to islamic law.

the same rules however do not apply to sea animals, there are some differences.

Makruh means hated. It's hard to pin down what level of makruh it is, somewhere between makruh tahreemi (so bad it's almost haraam) and makruh tanzihi (undesirable). The reasoning is out of respect for a horse's honor, so basically, because horses are awesome is why.


If you want to get into deeper waters, some say this verse...

[16:8] And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.

... means that these animals are just for riding and show, not eating.


If you want to get into muddy waters, then there's hadith about domesticated donkeys (wild ones like the onager are okay) being haram but another saying they're just makruh, there's a hadith that says mules are haraam, some hadith say that eating camel breaks your wudu...


But why would anyone want to eat horse, anyway.
