Halloween

YEP someone had to bring it up, should we celebrate Halloween or if you prefer all of Hallow's eve, I'm not a brimstone Christian but I think I'll call it a pass this year

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Count me in - I've already bought my costume and I can't wait! It's one of my favorite holidays.

I don't see anything wrong with celebrating this ancient holiday myself. Of course, you can MAKE it wrong any number of ways, but personally, I think it's great fun and I look forward to it all year long.

Do it for the children. Children are what matter and they love halloween.

The complete answer to this question would take a long time to explain. It would require starting from a foundation in Christianity and building upon that foundation understanding of particular behaviors and moral concepts that are involved in making decisions like these. It depends entirely on understanding what God thinks about the celebration of this day. If I were you, I wouldn't enter into this decision lightly as it is one that involves children.

"And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck."Mk 9:42

After all of my study, trying to better understand the God that I serve, I have come to the conclusion that my family and I will not celebrate this 'holiday'. Glory be to God.

When I was so much younger...the scheme of things was simple.

The not so saintly come out to play the day before All Saints day.
It's their way of having their holiday before the saints have theirs.

All through the night all of the mischief they can summon...they do.

To appease the mischief and spare oneself any harm....an offering is left at the door.
The treat disappears....no trick is dealt.

A religious holiday?...I don't think so.
A quaint custom of fun and games?...o yeah.

I favor the day more than any other.
Buy a different mask every year.
Plant a styrofoam graveyard in front of the house.
Eat way too much chocolate.

Boo! everybody...boowhaahaahaahaahaaaaaa!

Y'all stay home if you like, and leave your porch light off.

I am going to dress in a costume, turn my porch light on, play spooky sounds around my house, and make a big to-do about all the cute kids who come to my door in costumes!

And I am going to dress up for Halloween at work too - already got my costume!

When I was young, I always enjoy everytime that it's "halloween". I like hearing ghost stories and stuff. But now, I think that holiday is more of "All Saints and all soul's day" rather than "halloween". I just wanted to pray especially the chaplet of St. Michael during this season and contemplate the things I was able to accomplish during the first half of the year. I think, that's the real purpose why early Catholics "Christianized" this pagan holiday; for us to put more meaning into it.

As in the Eve of All Saints(and then All Souls) yet are we REALLY celebrating either of those holidays, feels like a secular holiday that attracts a lot of paganism squished in
No one is telling you to celebrate All Hallow's Eve with paganism. BTW, going door to door for candy? Christian too. Sure there is a veneer of the secular... but so what? Secular doesn't necessarily mean evil.

I personally believe that it is wrong to celebrate Halloween because it is a pagan "holiday."
Halloween is Christian.

So it's wrong to celebrate Christmas and Easter as well?
Neither Christmas, nor, especially, Easter are pagan holidays either.

I have absolutely no objections to Halloween on religious grounds, but I've never liked the holiday at all.

Love me some Halloween.

At age 49, I still dress up every year, attend Halloween parties, and dress in my costume to hand out candy.

My kids have told me that some of their favorite family memories from childhood revolve around getting our costumes together (took the whole month of October - thrift shopping, garage sales, etc), and hitting the neighborhood.

My parents always loved it when we came over to their house in our costumes before my kids went out trick or treating. Besides being good for lots of laughs, it was a bonding time between all of us. Here's a picture of the last Halloween my kids spent with my grandmother, who had bone cancer at the time, and died shortly after this picture was taken. I am so grateful for memories like this:

(My oldest son is Saladin, my youngest daughter is a Dead Bride Walking, and my youngest son is a court jester)

Here's a great picture of two of my granddaughters enjoying their Jack O Lantern:

Have to say it's more like that for me, until I got hit over the head with Brother Lawrence and Bonhoeffer. :D I have nothing really against it but it just seem like a lot of the kind of things a Christian teen like myself shouldn't do happen on that night

Some of you take Christianity too seriously. Applying it to whether you should celebrate Halloween or not. That's grinch like. It's like the grinch that stole Halloween.

The Holiday is not sin. Sin happens during the holiday. Sin happens during every holiday. Sin happens every day. I could understand where you're coming from with all the violent imagery associated with Halloween. But you could look at it this way--All saints day is celebrated on Nov. 1, All souls day is cellebrated on Nov. 2, therefore, you can think of Halloween as the eve of these two holidays (which it is). Celebrate it in the Christian way, think about it as the holy day before all saints day. Put a Christian dynamic to how you celebrate. Decorate with Christian purpose, dress up as a priest or a nun or any of the saints, go to mass that day, watch christian oriented programming, celebrate the holiday as a Christian one.

Don't just write it off as a non-Christian holiday. It is a Christian holiday. It's Hallows eve before all saint's day. It just grew up with culture to define it. Its not pagan. It just grew up with culture to define it. It is a Christian holiday.

Paganism refers to polytheistic religion. Halloween grew up in Christian Europe.
