Time. Once a hangover starts, in my experience, time is the only true cure. Symptoms can be mitigated slightly by hydrating oneself, but it takes time to overcome the alcohol withdrawal.

I've found preventative measures to be more effective than hangover cures...

Water...and lots of it, prior to going to sleep intoxicated.

Dehydration is the leading cause for most hangover symptoms.

Oh of course.
It’s why Powerade and what we call Gatorade here is so popular. They’re drinks that rehydrate you fast lol

A slurpie.
Sugar plus hydration plus cold.

However, drinking water between alcoholic drinks the night before works better, honestly.

Don't get drunk... Works for me.

A friend swore by a 'hair of the dog". Whenever he woke with a hangover his first action was make himself a g&t. If that didn't work he'd head off to the pub.

Yes hydration is an issue. But there is also chemistry. Hangovers come partly from acetaldehyde and formaldehyde, which are intermediate oxidation products from partially metabolising ethanol and methanol (there can, apparently, be traces of of methanol in some alcoholic drinks) respectively. The enzyme that oxidises these aldehydes further in the next step takes time to work, and how fast it works varies between individuals - often more slowly in Asiatic people, for example.

You can sometimes taste aldehydes the next morning if you have a hangover. I've even smelt it on the breath of a hungover guy sleeping on the beach after a New Year party. But maybe only a chemist would recognise the smell.

Details here: The Chemistry of a Hangover

Hydration helps not only with dehydration but also by making the kidneys work and thus helping to excrete these byproducts more quickly.

I learned that the sugar in drinks 'bothered' me more than the alcohol itself, so I avoided sweet drinks. I also 'mixed' with flavored water. I seldom got hangovers after I figured that out.

But, before that...

Vitamin Water's Rehab drink and Subway(vegetable only sandwich) seemed to help a lot.

Caffeine is a diuretic. In my experience, it exacerbates any headache pain and dehydration.
That's true.
It's also a comfort food (for some of us) and can boost short term energy.

It's not actually 'good' for a hangover, but it can give us the nice feels.

I have an excellent preventative measure. It's called not drinking.
