Clay isn't common here either but the city has one potter supply wholesaler. That's where I go.

We made our clay Ganeshas today. Before beginning, we watched a couple of videos on how to do it. That helped with the artistic endeavors a lot. I dare say, mine actually looked a bit like Ganesha. We began by chanting one of His chants. I've always found it cute ironic how you pray to Ganesha to get blessings to pray to Ganesha.

Vinayaka, see this: https://www.google.co.in/search?q=a...gB#newwindow=1&tbm=isch&q=abstract+ganesha+3d

Looking at what my sculpting abilities are, I could try some of these next year. Our Ganesha comes today, wife and son getting ready to bring the idol home, 'sthapana' tomorrow. Snacks for visitors ready. Ideas for decoration e-mailed to the flower-vendor. Aaratis and songs down-loaded and ready to be played. Pallets in Kashmir replaced by chilli powder grenades.
'Sarve bhavantu sukhinah, sarve santu nirāmayāh,
sarve pashyantu bhadrāṇi, mā kaṡchit duhkha bhāg bhavet."

The bigger question is - 'Who was the first deity to be invoked during the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati?' Prithivi, IMHO. Bhumi pujan. Everything else will follow that.

Part of the joy of Ganesh Chaturthi here in California is to decide where to immerse the clay Ganesha at the end of the Holiday cycle, which river? At the end of the festival, the Ganesha you can make out of clay is immersed in a body of water such as the sea, river or a lake. The clay disintegrates over time in the water.

So here, there are many choices but sometimes it is part of an adventure to pick a different location, driving perhaps a distance to the outer realms away from the city. Ganesh Chaturthi in 2016 is on Monday, the 5th of September which is labour day here. A lot of folks have it off.
Here is some more info in addition to what was already shared.

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi to all who enjoy this time! You can also do simple drawings, here is a website that can get you started:

To be honest about it, I enjoy the arts and crafts that can become part of the festival. Think about even a paper cup!

HAPPY HOLIDAY TIME!

On the East side of Mount Diablo ("Denil's Mountain") is another mountain known as Eagle's Peak.

Sometimes it is called Elephant Face.

Some say at the foot of Elephant Face is a baseball size gold placer nugget buried somewhere. Some call it the "Big Modac".

"Gannu bhaiyya" (Brother Ganesha) is with us. He came around 10 am. My son had gone to bring him home. He brought an environment-friendly clay Ganesha, though smaller in size (USD 15, well, it is festival time). That does not matter, in whatever form he chooses to come to us.The family was here for the 'sthapana'. He was greated with modaks and green grass which you can see in the image. Wife now preparing his evening meal. Ganapati Bappa Moriya.

GSB Mandal Ganapati will be decorated with 68 kilos of gold and 315 kilos of silver. It is insured for 44.7 million USD.
Don't much like it. Give it to the needy. But that is what it is.

Historically, the temple I go to has its largest crowd of the year on Ganesha Chaturthi. There is limited parking, and it can get really crowded. But that trend is changing, by people just coming on a nearby day instead. The listed event time was on Saturday night, and there were 7 to 800 people. We thought it was less than normal. So I asked the priest how it was in the AM and he said around 400, but went on to say the same for both pujas on Saturday. This being a long weekend, I went Monday to do some landscaping, and again the parking lot was full. So it seems the intuitive or logical faculties of all the groups have this 'too crowded' thing figured out.

A friend of ours told us a priest memory story. She goes a lot, but just recently returned from an Indian visit to see relatives on both sides. She brought Ganesha a new dhoti, and gave it to the priest about 10 days back. He said, 'Come back on the Monday after Chaturthi'. She figured he wouldn't remember, but he did. (Considering the large pujas and monumental remembering of stuff for Chaturthi) I'm always amazed at the subtle ways priests can help the deities uplift the spirits of devotees. Our friend was so happy.

;) The priests need to remember and oblige devotees so that in case of a ritual they are asked to officiate. Practical things.

Enough, feel like one from the monotheist religions doing this.

I consider myself fortunate that I never had to leave India, but for short periods. Songs for people who leave or are made to leave their homeland.
Chitthi air hai (Pankaj Udhas - Film Naam)
Mazendaran, mere vatan. (Talat Mehmood - Film Rustam Sohrab)
Ai mere pyare vatan (Manna Dey - Film Kabuliwala)

We did our Visarjana this AM into the river through this city. This version of Ganga was up from normal, but down substantially from 10 days back. The 4 Ganeshas were immersed separately ... to melt away into the sands of time.

We did not go anywhere. Bought an aluminium drum, placed the Ganapati idol in it. Have done no more about it but plan to put the water along with the clay at the root of the trees in our community park. Probably will do the same next year also. Quite hassle-free.
