Holi is March 13 Monday here in California. Happy Holi! Besides the festival of colours, here we say the Vampiress Holika is defeated by the Vishnu devotee named Prahlad.

Holika Dahan or the burning of Holika will happen Sunday night around 10 pm the evening before Holi on Monday. This year however I won't throw colors, but will burn Holika.

I will setup a pyre, albeit tiny one, and set Holika - made like "straw + rags doll" - to burn her in my backyard. A type of "nut" found on trees here, is convenient as her head with "face" painted. I would like to light a green sparkler but do not have any right now.

however ... maybe I won't.

Why? Because last night my Mother called to say she had "a powerful dream". She first told my wife, then demanded I come to the phone.

She told me, "(blank), now listen you do what I am telling you. I had a powerful dream last night. I dreamed you were doing something with fire - playing with fire - you had matches and were setting something on fire. There was straw that you set on fire then lost control. The fire spread in a field and then burned some property down and you got sued for damages... don't play with fire right now, you promise?"

... "Oh no," I said. "I don't play with fire. I won't"....

but, I do...

... but now that I think of it, I will let some else burn Holika this year.

Happy Holi to everyone celebrating it! All the best wishes!
As-salām ʿalaykum, Raahim from Croatia. Yes, a nice festival of Holi. Cold returned for one last time, snow in higher altitudes. Holika Dahan - burning of the demoness. We burnt few demons yesterday, will burn the rest today at night-fall. :)

The story is that a child (Prahlad) was momin but his father and aunt were kafirs. The aunt had a boon that fire will not burn her. So, the father asked the aunt to sit on a fire with the child. But God is great, he saved the child and burned the aunt.

.

Why did I thought that Holi was something to do with birth of some Hindu god.
Nice information, thanks.

That does not surprise me. We have so many. So, every other day is the birthday of some God or Goddess and an occasion to celebrate. :D

Krishna's birthday, Rama's birthday, Ganesha's birthday, Hanuman's birthday (note: when we are not fighting each other)
