Bhang is not part of the South Indian tradition, as far as I know, but who knows, really. I haven't been around much. It just seems odd to me although I can understand a betel drink or caffeine on Shivaratri just to keep going.

Bhang (I don't know the name for it in Tamil) is not just a part of North Indian tradition, but the South as well. South India makes some of the best Bhang-Tandai-s (Cold Drink Bhang) of all time. The secret recipe by Ramana is kept well hidden by Shiva Bhaktas of Tamil Nadu. It's actually an art how the Priests in South India create Bhang. Also, Thekkady in Kerala along the Western Ghats has some of the best Bhang licensed shops in all of South India. These can be accessed from Munnar in Kerala. In fact, some will say that Bhang Licensed shops in Kerala are the better ones in the South. I haven't had the pleasure of having first hand experience, but it's worth the try in the future.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Karnataka. Mysore in Karnataka is also a great place to find some of the best bhang.

It is almost here! I plan definitely to attend a temple where there is a celebration. I still need to visit a local temple which has Ganesha and Hanuman, but I am pretty sure they will also be celebrating Janmashtami since they celebrate Ram Naumi the birth of Lord Ramachandra. If not I will find one.

Update! - Yes, they must be having some recognition of Janmashtami at this temple, because here is a picture of the Radha-Krishna Murti they have in the temple! I just want to share it with you in the spirit of Janmashtami! They have very beautiful Murtis there!

As it turns out, some of us (Iyengars) are celebrating Janmashtami tomorrow... and that would include me. I've rescheduled all my plans for celebration to tomorrow.

"Lord Krishna is the color of a new rain cloud; therefore, He is compared to a transcendental cloud full of eternity, bliss, and cognizance"

I received this Janmashtami greeting this morning, it doesn't say which verse other than it is from the Krisna Upanishad.

HAPPY JANMASHTAMI
