Full moon was this morning a few minutes after 6 local time...it had actually set here before the moment of Full. The moment of solstice is about 5:30 or so this afternoon here...

In Puranic (Modern) Hinduism, this is the beginning of 'Dakshinayana' (the sun moving south). Not considered an auspicious period. Grandpa Bhishma was felled in this period in the Mahabharata war and waited for nearly a month to give up his soul and embrace death (he had the boon to be able to choose the moment of his death). The other half of the year was 'Uttarayana' (sun moving northwards). However, in the Aryan land, this was mid day of the Gods - 'Devayana', the vernal and autumnal equinoxes being the morning and evening of their day. The darker half was 'Pitriyana' (the day of the ancestors).

So two systems: Ancient Aryan (Devayana, Pitriyana), Puranic Modern Hinduism (Uttarayana, Dakshinayana)
