I`m a government physician by profession who at present maintains the health & well-being of 1600 prisoners accused of crimes from rape to selling illegal drugs. I like to chant the Hare Krishna maha mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Welcome.

If you put the chant in your signature, you won't have to keep chanting it while here.

Anyone who chants the mahamantra is certainly a friend of mine. Most folks don't understand that it isn't so much a "chant" as it is a path to "Him". Welcome aboard, bright star.

The principle of the maha-mantra is that it calms a restless mind. There are of course many mantras and techniques to calm the mind. The sine-qua-non of spiritual progress is a calm mind. The question is, can we calm the mind with the repetition of any random word or words, like say Coca-Cola? I would say maybe no, if with random words you start on a non-serious note. Otherwise it would be just as fine. The pitfall of mantra-chanting is that it could become mechanical. One has to be in a state of awareness in mantra-chanting and in turn, mantra-chanting leads us to greater awareness.
