And I thought Eric the Eel was a little on the slow side...

Interesting. It appears that swimming was not popular at all in Equatoria Guinea at that time. He was the best that his country had to offer. This was a personal best for him:

" Although Moussambani's time was still too slow to advance to the next round, he set a new personal best and an Equatoguinean national record.[2] He later became the coach of the national swimming squad of Equatorial Guinea.[3]"

Oh, and he did win that heat, beating the two other competitors.


I am pretty sure that there are other Somalis that could have beaten Ali.
