Health Care Bill Passes House 220-215

Magic Man

Reaper of Conversation
My biggest concern is still the wisdom of the federal government stepping into the health insurance field and assuming such costs when our economy is still poor, unemployment doesn't look to be subsiding and there are still derivative investments out there which can drive us down even more. The failure of the government to even take a reasonable stance to fix the issues with the market and spending more of it's time by essentially expanding the public sector is rather irresponsible.

Hmmm...I wonder whether you'd get the same opinion from someone who currently doesn't have insurance because they can't afford it? I'm going to bet not.

You're probably right.

It's not very reasonable to stipulate that just because someone doesn't have health care insurance that they support the efforts by the government. Who knows what percentage of small independent contractors support the current bill or even the current efforts to provide some form of federal mandated coverage? Most likely people who cannot afford insurance are for the bill.

Er, but don't you live in Canada, not Alaska? And why the heck would anyone think Sarah Palin is great? (Was it sarcasm?)

If you watch Palin's interviews, she always says in a cheery voice to virtually every answer "Well here in Alaska...*insert stupid reply here* :)" (eg. "I can see Russia from my house :)!")

I was playing off that.

LOL, did she actually say that? The woman must have super-vision...

Not in those exact words, but something similar. She was basically in an interview and asked about her experience with foreign policy and she said Alaska was close to Russia and Canada. Here...lemme find the quote.

Palin and Couric said:
COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?
PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land-- boundary that we have with-- Canada. It-- it's funny that a comment like that was-- kind of made to-- cari-- I don't know, you know? Reporters--
COURIC: Mock?
PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.
COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.
PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia--
COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?
PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We-- we do-- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where-- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is-- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to-- to our state.

That was being asked about her original answer. She was being given a second chance to offer a better answer. Here was the first.

When talking about what she says is her foreign policy experience, Sarah Palin told ABC news "...you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."
That quote made us want to go to that island.

A health care bill with a public option passed the house 220-215 Saturday evening. Michelle Bachmann flipped out. Is this the end of the Republic as we know it? Or has some good been done here?

The fact that the 40 vote DEM majority needed help to barely pass this by a few votes is a pretty good sign that it's not going to go well. Republicans will filibuster in the senate, or worse, might not even make it through in one piece.

DEMS won the battle but by no means even close to the war. The only reprieve is of course, that this is the first battle of its kind to be won.
