Health Care Workers Decline COVID-19 Vaccine

It would appear a significant percentage of health care workers are declining the vaccine. Anyone else find this concerning?

It is happening in nursing homes and, to a lesser degree, in hospitals, with employees expressing what experts say are unfounded fears of side effects from vaccines that were developed at record speed. More than three weeks into the campaign, some places are seeing as much as 80% of the staff holding back.

This is the result of the lack of trust in institutions, and the inexcusable politicising of a medical emergency, encouraged by Trump and the Trumpies. People will die in consequence. It's mad and seems to be a uniquely US phenomenon. In Britain people can't wait to be vaccinated.

It seems that up to 60% of french people don't want the vaccine. I find this very worrying.

But those working in healthcare don't seem blinded by this stupidity

The French rollout of the vaccine has been very slow and i wish my turn for the jab cant come soon enough.

Idiots.

I walked passed a clinic in Altrincham today, there were lots of old people waiting their turn. My turn will come, although I do worry about my Mum and Dad, they are both 90, they are classed as housebound and haven't been advised when they might get it yet.

My 93 year old dad was done 2 weeks ago. But he's in a care home, managed by a qualified nurse, who made sure to get on the list early. I don't know what the procedure is for old people who are still at home. I imagine it will come via the GP surgery that has their medical records.

Just because someone is a health care worker" doesn't mean they are not susceptible to nonsense.

“I don’t think anyone wants to be a guinea pig,” said Dr. Stephen Noble, a 42-year-old cardiothoracic surgeon in Portland, Oregon, who is postponing getting vaccinated. “At the end of the day, as a man of science, I just want to see what the data show. And give me the full data.”

If you have to identify yourself "as a man of science", that's a clue that you have many doubts about science. The guinea pigs were the people who enrolled in the trials. This "man of science" should know that.

But I'm completely OK with people not getting shots. That just means my family and I will get ours sooner.

That doctor is right : better to be dead than a guinea pig.

The only outcry from UK healthcare workers is that they are not sufficiently prioritised.

Speaking from my own personal experience, they aren't making getting the vaccine easy. I'm having to jump through a lot of hoops to get mine.

The majority of folks I work with are getting theirs. I work on the covid floor (critical care unit), so I'm certainly getting mine.

This Noble guy sounds like a jerk. The full data are available. Nothing is being hidden. And it is extensive. So, as you say, he would not be a guinea pig in the least. What a terrible example for a "man of science" to set.

Maybe contact their GP. At their age they should be a priority

It's sobering to realize that many of the problems we're seeing today were decades in the making, and that most of us are only now getting around to taking them seriously. That is, after they have 'detonated'.

Sad. The research is out there. Unless there is a strange side effect in genetics or some side effect that comes up long term, we're good. Both are extremely unlikely, given the prevalence and use of previous vaccines. 40 000 is no small trial. (40 000 guinea pigs)

I'm getting mine ASAP.

I will probably do that next week, the first vaccine had to be kept at (was it) minus 60; so not transportable. The new vaccines are transportable so I hope they will be on the radar when it becomes available.

I can see why. But I'd thought it be required for medical professionals. People should respect others decisions on what medicines they choose to take. We don't get alarmed over other treatments.

I did hear it may be required for high risk people. I hope it won't be since I take meds and can't afford to take something new.

In normal situations - at least here - having a full slate of vaccinations is a workplace requirement for most healthcare settings: if you're not vaccinated, you don't work - or get paid - until you get vaccinated.

In this situation, I'm not sure that this approach is viable. I keep hearing stories about long-term care homes being dangerously short-staffed because of the number of staff who are self-isolating.

At least here, the Province also has forbidden most health care staff from working in more than one long-term care home. Definitely prudent from an infection control perspective, but it's created even more staffing pressure.

... so with the refusal rates you describe, I'm not sure many health care facilities would just be able to tell their staff that they're fired if they refuse vaccination.

My first though upon reading the title of the thread was that perhaps they were worried about the potential for being among the 20+% who experience side-effects, which constitute flu-like symptoms (potential headache, dizziness, nausea or a combination), and that this would hinder their ability to work at a time when their work is at an unbelievable peak.

Does a vaccinated medical practitioner get time-off to push through any side-effects that may occur as a result of taking the vaccine? Could be another potential point of worry if they are simply expected to work through it when they are likely already exhausted.

I hate to say this, but if this virus takes off exponentially beyond the numbers we see now, where it's a "bring out your dead" sort of scenario with city trucks rolling through the streets to collect the dead, I think fears of being a guinea pig for taking a vaccine, will become far less concerning to folks at that point.

Hopefully, it won't need to come to that.

I'm thankful that in the clinic where I work we've seen much more positive responses. The rollout was expedited because these companies simultaneously manufactured the vaccine while it was still in the approval process with the FDA. Normally they don't do that till after approval. No safety steps were skipped in testing safety/efficacy.

I really hope people wise up.

I'm sure its among the same reasons I have.

Side effects and or ingredients used.

I'll never forget how sick I got after my flu shot*. I vowed never again.
