Hello members of RF!

I've been coming to RF for about a month now but only as a guest. I've read hundreds of pages of disscussions of great topics. And honestly I'm pretty intimidated. A lot of you are way smarter than I could ever hope to be.

As I write this I am a soldier serving in Iraq. I'm coming to RF to talk with people who may or may not believe in the same things as I do, but mainly I'm coming here to learn.

I guess I can be labeled as an Agnostic. I believe the bible to nothing more than a book written by people who were just trying to understand the world around them, basically I believe it to be a book of mythology. I believe that humans are an evolved animal, and what seperates us from other animals is our ability of reason and logic. I believe that humans should be empowered to be the absolute best individual they can be. I believe in the power of the mind and body. I do not love anything more than I love myself, friends and family, and life. I believe in treating people with the upmost respect...until they give me reason not to, then they are dead to me. I believe that once we die that the energy that is in our body is randomly distributed into the universe and used were ever it is needed. These things plus many other things I belive in.

As a soldier in Iraq, I am witnessing many things that make me question why some people are so willing to unconditionaly worship their god. But...I don't know. Like I said I'm here to learn and expand my mind as to why.

Thanks for listening.

all a member needs in order to make it in RF, is a healthy attitude and an interest, we do not demand scholarship! ;)

Thats the best attitude to have.

The Bible is worth further study than simplifying it. the Bible was written by people who understood their world very well (I mean the Ancient Near East) and there are very specific reasons for writing many of the things they did. granted you can find mythological traces in the bible, however it is a work of literature, philosophy, poetry, ideology, ethnic identity, and a partial source of history.

Most people need a grounding point. im sure you'll learn a lot from your observations. maybe we can even share experiences.

Thanks for listening.

I am in the Army National Guard Military Police. Although I am not allowed to say exaclty where in Iraq I'm in nor our current mission.

Thanks for explaining the bible to me like that. I'll go to the Chaplin tomorrow and pick up a free Army Bible!
