Hi from Kansas!

Hi everyone! I didn't come from any denominational background, and after much disillusionment within many fundamental churches, I searched for a God that seemed to make sense.

I was introduced to genius scientist Emanuel Swedenborg's works several years ago - who said he was called to reveal the mysteries of faith within the Bible, and later to A Course In Miracles. IMO, God has truly come to re-establish the reign of love in my life (and for others). Life has taken on real meaning, and many miraculous things have happened since then. I joined here to discuss many of their concepts.

Many of you may not have heard of Swedenborg. But it's a good chance that you may have heard of some of these people who were influenced by his works:

"For you Westerners, it is Swedenborg who is your Buddha, it is he who should be read and followed!" D. T. Suzuki, Zen Buddhist Scholar

"The most remarkable step in the religious history of recent ages is that made by the genius of Swedenborg." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"People who have had near-death experiences peek through the door of the after-life, but Swedenborg explored the whole house."
Kenneth Ring, founder of International Association for Near Death Studies

"Swedenborg's enormous work has been my companion throughout my entire life."
Henry Corbin, Islamic Scholar

"Do you know, I have come back to Swedenborg after vast studies of all religions, and after reading all the works published within the last sixty years? Swedenborg undoubtedly epitomizes all the religions - or rather the one religion - of humanity....Swedenborg's creed is the only acceptable one to superior souls." Honoré de Balzac

“Swedenborg enables us to understand why we were created, why we are alive, and what happens to us after our bodies die. Swedenborg enables us to have the best possible understanding of God’s message as it exists in those Bible books which constitutes God’s Word.” Martin Luther King Jr.

"It would be such a joy to me if I might be the instrument of bringing Swedenborg to a world that is spiritually deaf and blind." Helen Keller

Swedenborg "will probably 'make the deepest and broadest mark upon the religions of future ages here, of any man that ever walked the earth.' Walt Whitman, leading American poet of the nineteenth century

I'm also a huge Bob Dylan fan, and his gospel music in the 1980's made a big impact on my life too. I hope to share some of his music, other wonderful gospel music via youtube links. It has been said that music is a universal language and it is also healing.

Can't wait to get to chatting!

I've heard of him and, although I don't believe the founder of my Church (Joseph Smith) was specifically influenced by his works, I have heard that the two of them have a few beliefs in common, beliefs that are not held by mainstream Christianity. It would be interesting to discuss some of them.

Welcome! I have some family ties to Kansas and have visited several times.
A few years ago I found three of Swedenborg's wooks in a library stack. I found them ... interesting and thought provoking. I have also studied CIM and wonder what points of similarity or compatibility you perceive between Swedenbvorg and CIM?
A note to Katzpur: as a former Mormon, I find no reason the think that Joseph Smith was in anyway exposed to the works of Swedenborg and while there are a few similiaities, they are vague ...

TO tell you the truth, I can't even remember what they were. I just remember hearing that somewhere.

In you original post you quoted several other's views of Swedenborg. What's your view .. have the teachings (experiences) of Swedenborg influnced your life in any way? What specifically would you like to discuss?

If anyone would like to take the time....here is a link to archived Ustream video streams by Rev. Dr. Jonathan Rose of the New Church of Bryn Athyn, PA. He is a translator, bible scholar, Latin scholar, (not sure if scholar of Greek & Hebrew, but seems to know them).

This one in particular about "TWO JERUSALEMS" he walks thru the scriptures and shows how Jerusalem cannot mean the physical literal city on planet earth, and gives a much more meaningful biblical explanation, imo.

"The Bible gives differing predictions about Jerusalem; they are actually all spiritual in nature. Also a mention of the valley of decision."

He also goes into how Dispensationalism is so predominant in many if not most churches today...how this influences foreign policy, etc.

The NEw Church ministers (of Bryn Athyn) are on a mission to help restore Genuine Christianity. They reject original sin, a physical rapture, trinity of 3 Gods, faith alone, papal dominion, and few other things I can't think of right now. Imo, they give a much more beautiful, rational explanation of the Book of Revelation also. (The earliest dated Ustream videos are about Book of Revelation) They use the Bible Code that Swedenborg said to use to understand the scriptures....especially those in the Old Testament.

Swedenborg prophecied that the First Christian Church would end, and atheism would only increase if the Churches didn't change. Perhaps it's due to many erroneious teachings, egoism, (perhaps a little greed) etc that haved invade the original message, and these would eventually fail. It seems our generation has been witnessing much of it. He said literalism alone would run into problems. And we've been witnessing that too. But he said it's the 'internal meaning' (or the code - language of correspondence) that makes it DIVINE.

Link to page where the earliest 3 talks are about Book of Revelation. Each stream is about 90 minutes long.

I would be interested in what others think about these. IMO, this is the most wonderful news to help restore Genuine Christianity.

I think it's fascinating too that the first Swedenborgian New Church minister was invited twice to speak at the Capital by President Jefferson.
