Hi all.

I introduce myself to the forum with a request or suggestion.

In the uk, many people see their government debate issues in parliament and lament. Why? Because policies affecting our future are debated by a rabble of men and women who throw endless accusations at one another and seem to thrive on sarcasm and one-upmanship.

In this forum, which i am new to, i notice that there is a similar tone to many of the threads - each camp indulging in ridicule and name calling (idiot, ignorant, liar, 'you don't honestly believe that rubbish, do you?' etc.)

Wouldn't it be nice to have just one area of the forum where no idea is off limits but where the above approaches are banned?

So if you want a discussion and you don't mind the banter, great! Go to an existing forum. But if you want to know what the actual evidence, be it empirical or inference, against or for the questioners belief is you go to the new forum and get it without being patronised, ridiculed, shouted down etc.

Any thoughts?

Um, if you don't like the tone of this forum, perhaps it's you who should go elsewhere. Coming in to an existing community and telling us to change to suit your preferences is rather rude.

Welcome, Babydum! Name-calling of other members is against the rules, though ideas can be attacked with abandon. You can call some idea rubbish as long as you don't call the person who said it rubbish.

Don't worry your Ego will get used to it. :sad4:

Storm,
I'm not telling anyone to change, the suggestion was for a separate area, and i wanted peoples thoughts. No offence was intended.

The problem with the non debate areas is that i'm suggesting an area for debate.

If the idea is offensive, i apologise. :(

Your ideas are admirablwe....

problem: you are online, online discussion forums attract certain kinds of people
problem: this is very generalised forum, it never really gets into depth on anythign when it comes to debate

learn to accept what it is, as has been said it is overseen by moderators..its not a giant free for all. Ideas may be attacked, that is debate. I would suggest you start elsewhere as opposed to science vs religious debates, becuase those tend to be the most heated and frankly "rubber and glue, sticks to you" kind of debates, arguably more so than any other....

You are new here.... take a deep breath..and stay a while..before deciding whther it is for you, or not.

Always remember its the internet, it will never get that "deep" it just cant... because it is open to ANYone...;)

Thanks wandered off. Don't get me wrong, i can handle attack, fair or unfair, but i also feel that attacks often cloud very good issues that are brought up by all camps. And it's a shame, that's all really.

Welcome to RF! Please note that "ignorant" is not "name calling" when used in the proper way. There are many ignorant people here. I am even ignorant on some topics. The term is just perceived as rude because the most ignorant people think they know everything and they feel insulted when they are proved wrong.

Welcome to RF. A lot of debates that go on happen to lack any name-calling at all. If name calling is used against you in debate, please state, 'ad hominem' doesn't help validate your point, and continue.
