Playing the devil's advocate here, here's an article I found about abuse to Dalit women married to higher caste men in Tamil Nadu. I have no idea how commonplace since I haven't been to India for a long time.

Even if you did go, you wouldn't be able to figure it out. TN is 60 million people. Much goes unreported, I'm sure. I'm not sure if we can say for sure that caste is the cause of this either. So is the TN article and problem linked to caste? Certainly the author thinks so. I'm really not sure. Not saying it isn't, but not saying it is either.

60 million was a guess so I looked it up ... 72 million ... even smaller sample. But the article is a bit ironic given it states that intercaste marriage is there. At one time, according to what you m,ight read, intercaste marriage would have been a no-no.
