On the contrary it is just necessary to have a basic grasp of how historical research works. Claims of historicity such as this are called 'inferences to the best explanation' - which is drawn for ABDUCTIVE logic. Now the thing is that inferences to the best explanation DO NOT yield conclusions. They yield best guesses. Mistaking the inference drawn from abduction for a conclusion is a logical fallacy called 'affirming the consequent'.
