He was and is profoundly influential. I find that he is one of those "industry names"; not well known to the public like Marx or Freud, but philosophers and semioticists and linguists certainly know, because he did groundwork for multiple fields at a key moment in history.

To be that hated, one must be significant.

Btw, my criterion for evaluating philosophers or anyone who opines
thereupon isn't that they're "correct", but rather interesting.

It's bad to those who dislike it....just as I despise Marx (Karl, not Groucho).
Philosophers are a diverse lot....we're all going to hate some & like others.
And some wags won't even admit that some qualify for the title. Kurt Vonnegut
is my all time favorite, but I doubt anyone else considers him to even be one.
(He never joined the union. Blackballed by Majicthise & Vroomfondel no doubt.)

Philosophy begin in Greece

The western philosophical tradition began in ancient Greece in the 6th century BCE. The first of these philosophers are called "Presocratics" which designates that they came before Socrates.
