This is true. If you feel in such a way as to describe honesty in the situation as being "brutal" it's probably best to remain quiet. Sometimes it's tough to figure out how to be honest without being brutal in the delivery of it.

One need not say, "but you are fat" to be truthful. One can say "that dress is not the most flattering style/one I've seen on you." If she's asking about the dress, it is honest to respond about the dress. Some actually do look better than others.

From my experience: If you want honesty about whether or not a dress looks good on you, ask your daughter.

Looking at Crockett's Publications, I'm wondering if this 2014 study is what is being referred to: Dropbox - Crockett_2014_PNAS.pdf

I don't see how one gets “honesty feels better” out of that.

And, by the way, Molly Crockett is way too attractive to be a professor of experimental psychology and neuroscience.
