I work at a place where people tell me that they are endlessly sorry.

They are sorry that they do not have enough or any money. They are sorry that they are not prepared and are holding up the traffic behind them. They are sorry that they cannot get the car window down enough to hand you the money for their toll. They are sorry that their car door does not open. They are sorry that they only have a $20.00 bill for a $0.50 toll. They are sorry about the 76 pennies that they use to pay the $1.45 toll from Woodbury. They are sorry that they made an illegal U-turn and that they did not know it was against the law. They are sorry when they drop their payment in the snow-stained lanes. They are sorry that they did not notice that the rain from their windshield wipers was getting you soaking wet but never turn them off. They are sorry when they realize that I will not accept their ticket or currency when I noticed that they had it in their mouth. They are sorry that their coins are stained with nicotine and ashes from picking it out of their ashtrays and also for the paper bills, that are wet from some unknown substance or the five dollar bill that is given toward payment that is torn in half. They are sorry when they drive their car through the lane so fast that they miss grabbing the ticket that you intended to hand them. They are sorry that they cannot hear you announce the price of the toll because their radios are too loud. They are sorry for driving away without the rest of their change because they were talking on a cell-phone and did not realize they gave you a five dollar bill for a dollar toll. They are sorry that they came in your lane even though the arrow above your lane was clearly red and the traffic cone is now under their car. They are sorry that they cannot find the toll ticket in their car even though they say they only drove 15 miles between exits.

I have been a toll collector for the New York State Thruway for 17 years.

Goodnes, you all make me feel like a dinosaur! I am a retired (Through ill health)56 year old (Going on 21)house husband. Ouch, someone like Rich - Rich ?? are you there? Help! I'm all alone in a sea of youngsters; ned moral support!!!:jiggy:
Young michel, don't despair.

I am happily retired after a professionally extremely successful but financially equally lousy career in technical translating, after finally having realized that I wasted my time (and that of others) in marketing.

Now, I'm studying languages and religion, at my own pace, because I have no need for the credit points, neither for accumulating enough for a degree nor for fulfilling what's required for study loans and grants. This adds to the fun, because I can tell the professors etc. exactly what I think of their subjects, choice of books, the quality of their lectures and so on, without fearing repercussions of any kind. (OTOH, if a student were to criticize his/her professor vehemently enough, I rather think that the profs would hesitate to fail that student, for fear of being accused of retaliation. - Come to think of it, I should try that one!)

What a great question! I've loved getting to see a more personal side of all of you!

I'm actually on my third career. I did office type work for (secretarial & medical transcription) for 13 years and then taught school both college level and K-8 for 7 years before deciding that while I loved teaching, I hated dealing with the educational bureaucratic B.S. which left little time for teaching. I did the stay at home mommy thing for a year before starting my own internet business importing essential oils. My company is now 10 years old and going strong.

Michel, you aren't alone. I turn 49 this year.

Martha, if you'd like to talk please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. I'd avoid Paypal btw. Their rates are atrocious.

Feathers,

I do healing work as well (Reiki and Healing Touch) and teach classes in both. My sister does massage therapy in Ohio (the requirements are quite stringent compared to many states) and loves it. I prefer the Reiki because it appeals more to my spiritual side.

That's great to hear, Melody! I prefer the Reiki, as well, and hope that it becomes the primary part of my practice. (If nothing else, because it could prevent some carpal tunnel stuff from happening.) I look forward to being able to take an aromatherapy class, and add that to 'the list.'

I babysit and teach private lessons on French Horn. Of course I only have two students, but I only just started teaching this year, so I'm just glad I have any. I've wanted to be a professional musician since fifth grade (I'm a junior in high school right now), but who knows what I'll end up being! Just as long as I end up doing something that involves creativity, I'll be ok! :-D

I was a special education aide (absolutely loved it) for 5 years until I just couldn't afford to do it anymore, now I am a computer programmer - boring and completely uninspired... I have been thinking about going back to school for teaching but not sure at the moment. I am 33 and still do not know what I want to be when I grow up...
