How Do You Personally Decide Whether Someone Is Intelligent?

This is for "in person" encounters in that if a person laughs at a few of my jokes, I know they have a functioning brain. If they go, "I don't get it." I generally just say that it was nothing and move on to something more rewarding.

The point is that humor is a fairly complex thing and one has to have a certain understanding to make something common rather amusing.

On RF, if people frubal me, I assume they are VERY intelligent indeed. :)

My youngest five year old just displayed extreme intelligence by asking that I get bacon next time I go to the store cause "we really like it". I dont know whether to be proud or feel bad for not having bacon!

I like people who have good intelligence, but I don't like hanging around those who believe their intellectual, their too boring, but not all of course.

what criteria do you generally use to determine their level of intelligence?

Like others have said, i look at intelligence as a set of mental skills, where people will have strong points and weak points, with varying degrees. The application of these skills can range from doing something with your hand to manipulation and perception of ideas and information in your mind. The more the skills, and the higher level of skill someone has in each area, the more intelligent i'll perceive them to be. There are generally some signs that are not definitive indicators but are decent pointers to use, as long as their shortcomings are recognized.

Are they based on level of education, achievements at school/college or at work, or something else? And do you consider IQ scores to be a definite indicator of intelligence or lack thereof?

The above are examples of such signs. They're usually things i put into consideration, but not things i entirely rely upon or consider to be precise indicators for assessing intelligence. Other things i look for to get an idea about someone's level and type of intelligence include self-awareness, articulation power, ease of perception of new ideas, argumentation and reasoning skills, interests, artistic perception and skill etc.

Also as stated earlier, some areas of intelligence are more important to me than others, and some seem more beneficial, crucial or basic to have (which are the same areas to me). Finally, since i understand intelligence to be something that can grow, be trained and maintained, i can recognize potential of high intelligence in someone even if technically they have not yet properly acquired the level of skill their mind is capable of.

I find its nearly impossible to tell. If I do assume I am usually wrong.

I think something that applies much of the time is that when people assume they are "smarter" they are overestimating their capabilities and when someone assumes they are less so they are more often underestimating their capabilities.

The pschological phenomenon seems to come from people's states of awareness. The inept individual is incapable of seeing that they are inept while the competent individual can more accurately assess the abilities of those around them, thus causing a feeling of inferiority in respect to where they actually stand. "The more you know the more you know that you don't know." If anyone cares to tell me where that phrase comes from I'll give you an internet nickle.

But then on a different approach to things Einstein was quoted for saying “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

Though I am unfortunately to pessimistic to believe that 'everyone' is a genius. But I can more easily believe Bill Nye when he said "Everyone you will ever meet knows something that you don't." but that isn't the same thing as what Einstein seemed to be poking at.

I tend to judge people on the internet, especially in debate forums, by a few things.
1) Strength of their arguments. If their arguments are sound enough I should be persuaded or at least be able to understand them.
2) They do not arbitrarily or irrationally stick to their original premise if it becomes obvious they are wrong. Basically if they aren't caught making a total *** of themselves. Everyone is wrong now and again and there is no reason for macho ******** that runs rampant.
3) thar postes aint aboslutely bad wit 'da grammah. Because I have a terrible terrible terrible time with spelling because of a mild form of dyslexia. However I can overcome this with some patience and spellcheck.

Taking into account that different people are particularly good at different tasks, I think that the measure that I use to determine how intelligent I think someone is their capacity for critical thinking. I think that this goes along with the Aristotle quote that Penumbra mentioned.

Taking my self as example, I consider my self pretty smart (kinda :D Actually not really), though I have trouble with a lot of things because I have a hard time focusing and committing things to memory and sometimes a hard time forming organized trains of thought. I think a number of people have a hard time with certain brain functions, but that doesn't make them necessarily less intelligent. So to me, the underlying attribute that really determines level of intelligence, in general, is critical thinking.

When you decide whether someone is intelligent or not, what criteria do you generally use to determine their level of intelligence?

I rate intelligence as most useful, along with a whole bunch of other attributes.
There are differing kinds of intelligence, as shown in the brilliant film 'Rainman' where the mentally disabled brother was classed as genius in a few areas and disabled in all the others. In the film 'Forrest Gump' the hero could carry out co-ordinated functions such as table tennis or weapon assembly at world class standards and this can be regarded as a form of intelligence..... he was disabled in many others.

And so whilst I admire strength, athleticism, intelligence, knowledge, skills, initiative, common sense and other abilities, I will share a table with anybody however few of these abilities they might have......... I value them all

But if they don't have INTEGRITY..... I'm gone......
