If you have enough personal power you can indeed find one for yourself, however, if you have to ask yourself if you are powerful enough then it is unlikely that you are. If that is the case you must wait for a suitable spirit guide to notice you.

I would be greatly interested if others who have been down this road will differ from what I am saying.

I don't know how to believe in spirit guides ... why should I believe that there are such things? I'm curious, what makes you think you can contact one ....

Hiya dad. As one old geezer to possibly another old geezer...

I don't know how to believe in spirit guides ...
Is this a problem?

Precisely, Why should you believe in such things?

The concept is based on the idea that all beings are, in essence, "spirit" however there is a lot of "new age" crap that has filtered into the arena.

So, begin with the idea that the self you know yourself to be IS a “spirit”, currently existing in a physical body; it isn't such a reach to think that one can "contact" other “spirits” that are not so ensconced. When one is not tied by the idea that “self” is solely being a physical body then relatively bizarre avenues of reality open up and ones path can take rather fascinating new twists and turns.

I should point out however, that this path is not for the faint of heart.

Kill your current idea of a "spirit guide". In waking, view every living thing and every breath of every breeze as a potential spirit guide. In dreaming, view every entity as a potential spirit guide. Then be open to anything that comes.

Edited to add: Unless it's some guy offering to help you find a spirit guide... for a fee.

In my experience one doesn't find their spirit guide so much as actually make contact with the spirit that has always guided them... Some call them guardian angels, some spirit guides, some ancestors, and some totem spirits... Some even call it simply the higher self. There are many techniques available to people that are mostly asthetic in nature. The biggest thing is to open yourself up to the spirit world and wait... This may take a while, but it WILL come to you. It may help to practice your second sight as well as divination in order to get you further in tune with such things. But as previous posts have stated, its not for the faint of heart nor for the dabbler. This is a lifelong connection, and demands a serious mindset, and a mature attitude.
Be careful, as my teacher taught me, don't call anything up that you can't put back down! Good advice.lol.

May the peace of our Lord and Lady be with you!

I'm actually reading this book on how to find and communicate with your spirit guide. I'm not sure if it's legit, but I think it's worth looking at.

"Animal Spirit Guides" by Chris Luttichau. He's a modern practicing shaman who apparently has many students spread out. I hope that helps :)

For anyone with a Bible perspective, Jesus spoke of the Comforter/Holy Spirit and Paul spoke of the Holy Spirit being our teacher ... why would we have the need to look for some other "entity" fto guide us???

Is the Wholly Spirit limited for some reason to apparition in the form of a dove?

Perhaps because the hollow promises of Christianity don't work for some folks.

Just don't expect anything Native American out of this... it's new age "shamanism" all the way.
Always remember... "Never Pay To Pray".

ps... I just wanted to add that the focus on animal spirits is unhealthy. Traditionally spirits could be from plants, rocks, weather, whatever ... I'll never understand the new age focus on animal spirits and their supposed list of attributes.

Some of us are not Christian... For us, Creator has given sources of wisdom through all of nature.
How do you know your "holy spirit" is the same one for everyone? Conversely how do you know your "holy spirit" is the same as my 'spirit guide'?

Alrighty, I'll keep that in mind. So what advice do you have for us? How would we find our spirit guides?

You don't...

If you get one, it finds you.... when you least expect it... if you want it or not.
You have no control over what the spirits do, that is the biggest ego issue people need to let go of.

Exactly. This was precisely what I was alluding to when I talked about "if you are powerful enough" comment. The point is, you don't get a great deal of personal power prior to having a spirit guide seek you out. :) The simple fact that folks still want to "find" their spirit guide is indicative of the fact that they are not ready for it quite yet.

My 16 year old sister Amy, has a friend that believes that all living things are spirit guides. He will not eat meat, and refuses to kill flies or mosquitos. He claims that there was an ancient tribe of wise men and women who had great faith in the spiritual wisdom of all living things, even the mosquitos. According to her friend, this ancient tribe claimed that mosquitos came from a wise bear that endowed them with great wisdom and guidance. To kill one, they believed, was to destroy a sacred spiritual guide. When my sister asked her friend what happened to this tribe of wise people, he said that from all historical accounts, they seemed to have dissapeared. My sister then asked her friend, if he had ever heard of malaria, which is a deadly disease spread by the wisdom of the ancient mosquito, which is still here on this planet spreading it's spiritual wisdom.

Well, if that's the case, is there any way to spiritually prepare yourself or strengthen yourself in order to be deemed worthy enough for a spirit guide to seek you out?
