How does one know if they are possessed?

without supernatural strength I doubt it, and without strong aversion to the cross (as in trying to flee from it`s sight or needing to spit it on sight, etc) I don`t think you would be said to be possesed according to CATHOLIC doctrine. Other forms of christianism may say different things about you.

Correction, the Catholic Church do not rely on those signs alone(refer to my answer, the signs you have mentioned is not even 1/4 of what the Church deems as signs of possession) .Just please, before you say that "this is the doctrine of the Catholic Church", do some research first, for you might give an impression that what you says is what the Church itself believes in. Thank you.

Corrie Ten Boom has a great little book on dealing with Demon Possession. Her best indication of possession is the inability to ask Jesus to save you, when you want to.

1 Corinthians 12:10 describes a gift of discernment of spirits. Someone with this gift is capable of discerning whether a person is speaking (or acting/responding) inspired or touched by God, by Satan and his minions or is speaking from his own person. Having the gift is no good if one is ignoring the promptings--I've spent time talking to "stubborn people" when they needed prayer instead because there was a demonic oppression involved at the time.

Also, see 1 John 4:2, Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit and 1 Corinthians 12:3, Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

Try it now and see. If one is unable to say aloud, "Jesus is Lord!" there may be a spiritual posession there.

I used to think possession was like the false movie the exorcist, like it happens rarely and it is really evil, when in fact we are all possessed from birth by our selfish natures, anger, hate, jealousy, fighting, arguing, constantly.

We are 99.9 percent always having some bad trait of character.
We are either under God's spirit or under sinning spirit, there is no other choices.
Anyone when they go to JEsus is cleared of bad spirits, and when they sing holy song, or study with a good heart are free of spirits, and when they go out and watch TV or movie they are filled with bad sentiments.
Its the sentiments of the heart.
if they are not pure you have bad spirits.
If they are pure you have Jesus.
Everyone knows when they have Jesus, so its easy to tell.
The point is, mostly we are under influences of selfish, worldly joking foolish spirits.

Enemy presents a stand up comic, a clown, a sports player, a movie of excitement as an entertainer, as the three judges of american idol millions of ways.

What isnt obvious, is we like to be possessed with these worldy things and thoughts, but they dont give life. Jesus gives real joy and peace.
How many times after the bars and dance halls close, you come home 3 am and it is dark and you are lonely. the entertaining stops and your lonely and you know you arent right with God.

This is the holy spirit calling you. pleading. Dont waste your life!

so many people thing emptiness is evil and happy joking is God - this is backwards.

Think of it this way, what would a noble pure angel do in your situation. Tell jokes? no. Go to a bar? never. mok someone and tease them? Not on your life.
Visit grandma and cheer her up? yes.
Help the poor? yes
volunteer at a hospital?
yes.

you know, you just dont like it. no one likes to give up sin.
except
EXCEPT!
When you pray and ask Jesus to take away the DESIRE for sin, then he works miracle.
Then he changes your real heart longings!
Yes he does, and he makes you way happier than worldly lust, and way happier than crack or meth. Not kidding.

So the key is to ASK him to remmove your desires for these things. Soon you will see changing desires and changing life! try it
and the demons are gone.

as a clown. and stand up comic

My dear friend. it is ALL ABOUT FALLING IN LOVE WITH JESUS!
Ask him to help you fall in love with him, he is awesome.
On a wedding night when bride was dressing to see her future husband, could you talk her into going shopping? Seeing a movie? out to dinner? cruising the strip?
are you kidding?
She would say "Have you lost your mind?"
You know you are in love with Jesus when sin doesnt interest you anymore.
its wonderful, its like the butterflies as you take the roller coaster first dip and it is a very happy life. Its all the time.

You can fall in love with him any moment, when you finally realize he has been waiting for you all your life it happen, and then you say, yes, I love you JEsus, take my heart, my mind, my soul, my car, my money, my every thought. take me any way you want, I am yours.
And life is divine from that moment on.
And you know he hates sin, so you ask him to remove the desires for it, and with time they all fade away, constantly resist and pray and tell him how you love him and they all faaaaade, awaaaaay. They are nothing.

You can offer me crack and I would now say, I dont want it. I have something better. And I do.
And there are so many poor souls out there debating wether there is even a God. How sad.
Debating wether there is love, wether he talks to you constantly, guids you talks to youin your thoughts, its like asking a bride, lets debate if you really have a betrothed husband, its really silly. You know it. Who do I kiss then, my imagination? not likely.

Song 3:4 It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go...
It is real real real, and it is deep. and it gets better every day. I am so sorry I did not find him when I was ten, but only two yeas ago, what a waste of time and talent I wasted on myself and nothing to show, but he forgave me.
You know when I look at his face you know what I see? Love. He has deep scars marring his forehead from the thorn crown, they will be there forever, and they belonged to me, but he took them. and every time I tell him how much love him, he doesnt say a word, he just holds up his hands and shows me his scars, and loveingly gazes at me and says, You were worth it.
Yes he is real.

Have you been rejected by society, been abused, been ridiculed, been mocked, made to feel unworthy and worthless and because of this see this world as a living hell in which you wish to escape even if by death itself?

If so, you are possessed by demons which tear at your soul.

Love, acceptance, forgiveness drives them away.

ok. Then I am doomed. Although I haven't any suicidal thoughts so far. My life although a hell still has some meaning.

Unnatural body postures and a change in voice are clear signs of some sort of possession. Remember, there are many spirits all around us. Not all of them are demons, per se. There are even angels all around us. Angels can go inside of us and make us do stuff. Angels set us to pray, for example. If you are being possessed by demons, pray to God that he will deliver you from them, and command the demons in the name of Jesus Christ to leave your set. God will send angels to go in your set and drive out the demons.

The Bible doesn't have a list of things that one has to have to be possessed.

There are varying degrees of influence before possession will take place and what people call it depends on who taught who and what verbiage they used.

It could start with depression moving to oppression and finishing with possession and everything in between. Many times, the person themselves know when a possession has taken place.

Scripturally, possession can be manifested by being mute, though not all mutes are demon possessed; unnatural strength, though possession doesn't always translate into unnatural strength; epileptic seizures, though not all epileptics are caused by demons; ability to know things about people, though not all who know things are demon possessions; and things like unto these. Sometimes it causes people to bark like dogs and curse, move like a snake as if on who didn't have bones, constantly involuntarily trying to kill oneself . I'm sure there are many other manifestations.

I'm kind of fascinated about such Christian concepts, but I don't know how reliable what I find online is. If you believe in demonic possession... how does one know if someone if they themselves are specifically possessed?
A test some Orthodox priests will do is have three cups of water--two ordinary cups of water, and one with holy water in it. The subject will drink or sip out of each of the three cups, and have no clue which cup has holy water in it. If there is an adverse reaction to the cup with holy water, and no reaction to the other two cups, then the person is possessed.
