How exactly to stop re-sinning?

InChrist

So you need to enter a constant state of walking meditation with Christ as the focus?

If you want to call it meditation you may. The scriptures certainly speak of mediating on God's Word. But biblical mediation is active thinking and contemplating on the things of God, not the passive mind-emptying of Eastern or occult practices.

So magic(k). You actively cause change to occur in yourself in order to evolve into something new in accordance with the will of God.

Hi,
My question that is on my mind is: since we need to ask to be forgiven always as we sin daily no matter what; when we pray for forgiveness of sins how do you maintain and stay like that? For instance I would be 'good' for a couple of days to weeks then I would somehow do the same mistake again. With that I suddenly be feel guilty and so bad about myself and also feel like I shouldn't even pray for forgiveness again if I know that I will do it again and again and again. I'm finding it so hard to be a good person with a good example. What do you people do to stay on track at least?
I personally like to say the Canon of Repentance after committing sins of the flesh that I still particularly struggle with. Outside of that, doing my best to adhere to a prayer rule (morning and evening prayers in my little icon corner), attending divine services, praying throughout the day (like on break at work, or whenever the urge hits me to pray anything), and honestly praying that God will help me to just move on with my life and just leave this sin behind, is what I've been doing. Also trying to start getting into the habit of reading Scripture is something I really want to do.

Some sins are a crutch, so asking God to help us throw away our crutches and walk forward with Him might help you as well. I did this recently, and so far, so good.

Dont think about how deliciously tempting it is

Dont think about how much you like doing it

Dont think about how alive it makes you feel

Or how easy it is

Or how exquisetly pleasurable.

Dont think one more time wont hurt

Did that help? :angel2:

No, not magick. It is a willing submission to the will of God.
:bible:

You said it's not passive / submissive but active. You're contradicting yourself.

He is either making a conscious effort(active) to be receptive (passive, and which is unlikely, as he thinks listening to God is sinful)

Or saying actively pay attention to all your thoughts and actions so they stay accordant to what he believes the book he believes is the only one coming from God says.

Either way, its yoo delusional for me to seriously deem at as magic.

Prayer asking for anything though, that is magic indeed.

It may be helpful to think more in terms of excellence rather than perfection. The latter is idealistic and vague. Excellence, on the other hand, has more to do with demonstrating character strengths and virtues in positive ways in real time.

Excessively worrying about one's failings has a way of feeding them and causing the habits to persist. It is better to focus on just establishing new positive patterns over them. Feeling bad about always getting angry? Try compassion. Judging yourself harshly for being greedy? Practice gratitude.

Don't be perfect. Be excellent.

Well obviously prayer is magic, so I suppose InChrist gets stuck as an occultist anyways ;)

it depends on the seriousness of the sin...if its something like the slip of the tongue, then we all do that quite often and we just have to keep working at it

but if its something more serious where you actually have to physically perform the action, then you need to question yourself, look at why you are failing and why you keep going back to the same sin....look at what leads you there. If you know what leads you there, can you eliminate the thing that leads you there. If you know it is wrong but still desire it, can you learn to dislike it rather then secretly like it.

Do you understand what makes the act a sin in Gods view. Try to understand why he hates it.... get his view on the matter and make it your own view. This way, if you learn to hate the things he hates, then you will not fall into them so easily.

Psalm 119:104 Owing to your orders I behave with understanding. That is why I have hated every false path

It also tells us to 'hate was is bad and love what is good' which is very wise advice considering we are repelled by things we hate... if we learn to hate the sin, then we will not fall into it easily.

Oh it is magic, but the term "occult" is weird regardless.

I mean, they dont precisely hide how to pray, nor magic books in general tend to be very hidden in this day and age.

All kinds of magic are way less occult today :D

Hi Dinami.

From an Islamic perspective the feeling of stopping from asking God for forgiveness comes from the devil. Instead of stopping from asking for forgiveness you should instead regret having made a mistake and continue to ask God to forgive you. If you don't ask God to forgive you then who else can forgive you other than Him and who else can you pray to other than Him?

Never break your ties with God.

As for how to stop sinning, every sin has a solution. It is impossible to stop sinning completely but it is possible to commit small and fewer sins than big and frequent sins.

I will give you an example of what I mean by solution;

Many youth (male and female) nowadays living in the west face many problems on the issue of intermingling with the opposite sex as it increases one's desires. So Islam has recommended that the youth must marry as early as possible which in turn will prevent them from committing many sins. Marriage is a solution to a lot of a persons desires, it makes them stable and completes half of ones religion (Islamic view).

I hope that example makes sense.

Pretty true. But I would say that the hiddenness of occultism, at least today, simply refers to the subjective knowledge that exists beyond the senses. Prayer totally fits IMO.

ANYWAYS......

First I give definition of sin.

What is Sin?

Sin is an activity which renders the human soul sick and incapable of viewing the face of God. Difficulties have to be encountered in the journey which the soul undertakes as it moves towards the purpose of its creation.
Activities which amount to sinning are either physical whose dangers are visible to oneself as well as to others; or, they are spiritual. Of the physical activities many are such that the dangers and disabilities they entail are obvious.

What are good deeds? Good deeds are deeds which bring a person enough strength to join the onward march in the hereafter and which makes the soul capable of viewing the face of the Lord. Normally, a healthy person means one who is capable of going about life's activities in a normal way.

One does not have to be extra-capable. One has to be just capable. Otherwise, small defects exist in everyone. Doctors cannot point to a single perfectly healthy body. A good man is one who has done enough good deeds both physical and spiritual to be capable of viewing the face of God.

Way of the Seekers: What is Sin?

Now the question: how to be free from sin?

I would suggest to read pages 23-25 of the book “How to be free from sin?” by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad- the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi; the link is given below:

How to be Free from Sin

Daughter of Chaos
If you don't like how you are, first it helps to unwravel what has worked together in your life to make you how you are (at present). You generally can't just reach in and change something about yourself directly and instantaniously. Things are often connected to a web of other things, and even those that are more stand alone have been conditioned in us by thoughtless repetition over time.

I personally have found that a kind of silent and detatched observation of 'the self' reveals the most interesting and useful insights.

As well I will add, with the topic of dogmatic religion in mind, that if YOU personally don't feel that something is wrong, and you are striving not to do that thing because you are being TOLD it is wrong... you will never change yourself. You will only force yourself into a contortion of painful self conditioning until you break.
