If we have a word for "the Earth" why do we need "the world"? Do the two terms differ at all?

They mean the same thing to me... But I never know what the hell is going on about anything... so... Whatever everyone else decides is fine. Not like it matters. ;)

The wise man is the one who knows that he knows nothing (or something (like that)).

What about the wide world of wrestling? How about the fascinating world of dung beetles? Those are both worlds, too.

I think those are more of just a funny thing to say and mean the "ways of" Like the wild ways of dung bettles... Like what kind of crazy things do those dung beetles do?? :D

Anyway, my battery on my laptop is just about dead, so I guess it's sleep time for me and Baggins. :D

I think "the ways of" describes worlds quite well. Our world, this earth, has its ways too, by which we know it.

I like to think of the world as something I know. I might not know all the earth, but I know the world --it's here for me. So is the moon in the sky.

Goodnight Hannah.

for me, they do. in my mind Earth is this planet with or without human, the nature. the world is what we built on it. but of course this is very personal understanding.

For me a world is a combination of a planet with life on it. Earth is the name of the world we live in/on. really not that different from your version :)

You 'little' one is one world, what's the other that makes for 'at least'?

In what way do they not belong? I know a few people who I wish weren't a part of my world, but wishes really aren't ponies (sigh).

One world (universe) which contains many worlds (our lives, planets, etc.). I'm highly suspicious of a "multiverse", although that would also be one (multiverse) which contains many (the parallel universes).

We call world "maailma", which means literally "earth air", which suggests that this planet is the one meaningful place, or world, for us.

Astronomy and space exploration offer a glimpse to the other worlds though.
