How old is too old for trick or treating?

So, my youngest is 14 years old in the 8th grade and he's as tall as me. I've been trying to discourage him from trick or treating this year. I think he's too old and it's getting ridiculous.

What do you think is the cut-off for trick-or-treating?

No cut off. But they need to;
1) get into the spirit, which includes properly dressing up.
2) make space/allowance for the littlies, and not turn it into 'Teenage-Lolly-Grab II : The Sugar High'.

My 12 and 14 year olds got fully dressed up and took their 2 year old sister trick or treating. They grabbed an early dinner, got dropped with friends, and then went trick or treating with peers.

In our local area, houses who want to be approached leave a pumpkin at their letter box, so I think that works just fine.

They could be doing worse things with their time.

Update: The boy has left and is going trick or treating. The costume actually doesn't look too bad for being thrown together at the last minute.

We're getting a bit of foot traffic here at the house. My wife is dressed as the tooth fairy answering the door, I'm trying to keep the little pooch from going crazy. The little ones in their outfits are adorbs.

But the thing was, when our bags were half way full, we'd find some random kid and tell him/her that they'd won the best costume prize, and empty our bags into theirs. We did that a few times. I'm sure that was memorable for the kids who 'won
Agree, that is indeed awesome (btw thanks for the candy, and I'm glad you liked my middle-aged homeless guy costume. :thumbsup:).

Trick and treating is always slow in my neighborhood. I am about to turn off the light in a half an hour or so. I went to the grocery store and was headed home as it was getting dark. I saw one father out with his two girls and backtracked and crossed the street and made a personal delivery of candy for trick and treat. Besides that I had a passel of four kids come to the house.

And I just shut down my lights. Kids too old and not even bothering to dress up. I still had candy to spare, I gave them a bit and called an end to it. Next time I will follow my instincts on when to close down.

There's a developmentally delayed guy in his mid-40s in our neighbourhood. He came by this evening and we gave him handfuls of candy.

... so apparently, our cutoff is somewhere north of the mid-40s.
