How would you describe God to a child?

I would tell them nobody really knows what God is, and then I'd tell them what the Tao is, as far as I've been able to understand. I think it'd basically involve pointing to everything that is there (and everything that isn't there) and saying "That's the Tao." ;)

Oh, I can answer this one. Its simple. I wouldent. I would wait until they were adolecent age before introducing the concept of a higher power. Then once I felt they were ready I would make them go on the internet, the library, I wold make them do as much research as possible. Then I would sit them down and ask them what they believed. God is what you want him to be. No more. No less. He may be the alpha and the omega. He may love us all equally. He may have favorites. He may not love us at all. But if he does exist we have destroyed him in our minds. There is no one ideal of god. There is no real answer to your question, in my opinion.

So when the kid comes to you to ask what God is, you won't say a thing or what?

Hmmmmm! Well having 3 children myself, and because I homeschool, we have talked about God, Jesus (also reading a childs Bible This really helped)
There are some very big words in this thread to describe God to a child though.
The way I entered into this subject, was by explaining we cant see him... if it is a him lol, but people believe he is there, almost like a very bright light, that no one see's, a little like a ora (whats a ora mum?) you get the picture here lol.
We talk alot more about his son Jesus, and what he has done, and of course pictures always seem to help too.

There is your best reply folks!!! Take a bow Maize.

What would I say? Number one, I am a very playful sort. Two, we are talking about children. Three, we are talking about god.

I would say, "I think God is All That Is. Nothing more, nothing less. What do you think God is?"

I would also ask them to think what they wished and arrive at their own conclusions. I would finish with, "When you have thought about this for a few years, come back and ask me again. When you are older, you might be able to understand a better answer."
