Bummer. There are far too few of his ilk in the world. He called it like it was, and backed it up.

RIP Howard

I know a little of Zinn and agree with Seyorni,i particularly like this quote:

"Historically, government, whether in the hands of Republicans or democrats, conservatives or liberals, has failed its responsibilities until forced to by direct action: sit-ins and Freedom Rides for the rights of black people, strikes and boycotts...

I only heard of Howard Zinn in the last year, I heard him mentioned a few times on Democracy Now and then I read Chomsky's essay about Zinn's book "Vietnam: The Logic of Withdrawal".

Do you recommend "A People's History"? The OP Salon.com article was somewhat critical of the book.

Ironically enough, I am reading it now. It is ******* awesome. So enlightening. So much false indoctrination clarified, all put together in one tight knit package. It's like the Bible for anyone who cares about anything at all.

Sorry, but I didnt find his work all that enlightening. He tended to overstate the obvious while missing very important things, while purposefully trying to be provocative, IMO. I am sure he was a really nice guy, and I would have liked him had I met him. As it stands, though, hes just another person who was here and now isn't. Im sure somebody who knew him misses him.

I hope you're available to deliver my eulogy when the time comes.

In "People's History of America"? You want to elaborate anymore on that? Surely the entire book was not obvious. I mean, he does overstate some points, but it's because he's trying to hint at something! It's not entirely objective, that was the personality in the book!

I highly recommend the book, Spinks. It ranks up there with Jackson Turner's thesis as a work that changed how American history is viewed.

Howard Zinn was one of the great prophetic voices in America and he will be missed. I first read People's History of the US in my AP US History class in my junior year of HS. Once I complete my master's degree in education I will use People's History in my classes.
