Humans who put less value in humanity

It appears to me that with all these federally funded research to see if there are other life forms, or research to find out more about our universe it appears that there is less interest in humanity. I mean (with the exception of cancer and HIV/AIDS research), how can humans be so eager to learn about life on other planets yet we don't know how to treat each other?

Sure we do.

Martin Luther King jr, and others luke him and those before him set the blueprints.

I mean if racism exist here on earth what makes humans think aliens will be widely accepted?

What I mean is that on the whole, societies have not made 'humanity' the priority. Of course there are individual exceptions.

I don't see anything wrong with looking to discover and gain knowledge, but I do think that perhaps more money goes into some programs that could otherwise be going to helping our own planet.

Right that is what I was getting to.

I also believe ancient extraterrestrial civilization (should they exist) knows this amd know humans as a whole aren't psychologically prepared to meet other species of intelligent life because of ou history of treatment towards each other.

The US government spent like $3,800 billion for 2011, and around $19 billion of that was on NASA. That's 0.5%. The peak NASA budget ever was like 4.5% of the total budget when humans were going to the moon. Sometimes unifying behind a cause is just what humans need. And understanding the vastness of space can put earthly problems into perspective.

In comparison, almost $700 billion was spent on defense, around $700 billion was spent on social security, $600 billion for unemployment, welfare, other. Over $700 billion for medicare and medicaid. Plus all the departments and agencies dealing with energy, food safety, etc. Plus all the state budgets that are not very related to space (instead things like roads, fire departments, etc).

And other countries and their space programs probably have similar percentages spent on space as the US.

So no, it doesn't appear to me that there is less interest in humanity, when hundreds and hundreds of times the money is spent on humans compared to that which is spent on space research.

I disagree. Lack of funding in space programs compared to research funding in human health. The proof is not the funding but the results

What do you mean results?

For example, and with the exclusion of health research e.g. Breast Cancer research lets use the example of the priaon system

Sociologiat have stuided and verified that minorities such as Hispanics and Blacks are incarcerated more than other ethnic groups due to active targeting racism. This is a human problem, not only are peison systems big business, but recitivism (did I spell that right) is high (depending on the criminal and their crime) due to the psychological phenomenon that criminals can't be rehabilitated nor ought to be given a chance
(a good indicator are felons who apply for jobs and compare them to non-felons) and helplessness which influences people to commit crimes to get by financially. Just a brief example

Humans are just a small part of a larger universe. Learning about other life is like a cog learning about the larger machine it's a part of: I find no reason why doing so shouldn't be a top priority.

And your point is sorry? You said why don't we focus more on human problems, you were shown that we do but you disagreed by saying "look at the results." What are you on about? Are you trying to compare scientific results in fields like cosmology to sociology in terms of generating "results"?

My point is there are common human issues that aren't being focused on. Issues such as inner city poverty, education, institutional racism, and other issues. I see this everyday at work and its really frustrating to see young kids living in hopeless conditions. Usually some folks live by the old "White Protestant" ideology philosophy that we are what we make ourselves to be and not people being born into disadvantage positions.

What I mean is there aren't enough grass roots groups aside from the ones that are on the ground helping other humans. Skid Row a popular area in downtown LA has whole families on the sidewalk. Some living there for years. Many of these people are on drugs, having psychological issues, and many live with communicable diseases but lack the assistance to get healthcare.

I used the prison example because we also have this idea that convicts are most likely not rtehabilitated upon release from prison so its hard for these men and women to get jobs. So with all these collective issues my point is why aren't we focusing more on these local problems but spend tens of millions of dollars on SETI to find out if there are life on other planets? That is my point!

How is spending money supposed to result in people being more humane to each other?

No its not spending money. In fact money is just a means to provide assistance and resources for those trying to "fix" the problem. My point is there isn't enough being done to assist humans. Call me naive but at the hospital and clinics I see the human problem everyday.

If you don't see how pure and research science, including such things as the space program, help humans, then you need to look a little closer. It doesn't hurt to look at the big picture once in awhile as well.
