Hurricane Milton

anna.

colors your eyes with what's not there
Noah Bergren
8PM EDT: This is nothing short of astronomical. I am at a loss for words to meteorologically describe you the storms small eye and intensity. 897mb pressure with 180 MPH max sustained winds and gusts 200+ MPH. This is now the 4th strongest hurricane ever recorded by pressure on this side of the world. The eye is TINY at nearly 3.8 miles wide. This hurricane is nearing the mathematical limit of what Earth's atmosphere over this ocean water can produce.

Property values in FL are already falling because
of climate change's effects, ie, more flooding.
This will continue the trend.
It never made sense to me to build in the path
of hurricanes just a few feet above sea level.

And there's the National Geographic
map of USA if polar ice melted.....

If there are any more insurance companies covering property in Florida they will have reason to pull out. Insurance rates are going up to cover losses the companies are experiencing, and many homeowners are seeing policies cancelled if they have older roofs or other issues. There is a crisis in home insurance looming as more extreme weather comes. This will add the to increasing cost of housing.

Hope everyone stays safe.

I don't think I could ever live in a hurricane zone. I also wouldn't want to live in tornado alley, and I've resisted living in California because of earthquakes.

I'd rather be in an earthquake in Cali as buildings are required to be built according to seismic code ("earthquake proof").

Milton is a five right now, but it is still projected to go down to a three level hurricane or in other words, just a bad hurricane. I am sorry to see Florida hit so hard twice in a row.

It's still going to be a really severe storm and it's projected to make landfall at night, which is even worse with the storm surge and low visibility.

I know. A three hurricane is nothing to be sneezed at. This may be the first election where AGW makes a significant difference. One of the predictions of AGW has been a worsening of tropical storms. I do not want to win that debate this way, but it may happen.

Yeah, I know. I guess it's just some kind of phobia I've had all my life. My mother lived in L.A. most of her life, and she always insisted on sitting in the very last row of a movie theater, just in case of an earthquake. At least with hurricanes, you can see them coming and get regular reports before they hit. There's time to prepare, but with earthquakes, you just never know. I've also heard people talk that when "the big one" hits, it'll be all over for California.

People have been saying that for decades. It's obvious wishful thinking for a lot of them. Lol.

There is this, though:
"According to the third Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF3) report, in the next 30 years (beginning in 2014), there is a:

More than 99% chance that one or more M6.7 or greater earthquakes will strike somewhere in California
75% chance one or more M7.0 or greater earthquakes will strike Southern California
76% chance one or more M7.0 or greater earthquakes will strike Northern California"
