I am Legend

The Omega Man is one of my favorite movies of all time when I first saw the adds for I am ledgered I knew it had to be related then I saw an interview on TV with Will Smith about it and he said it was now I'm busting to see it. I think it is already opened here (I know it is Friday) I'm going to see it over the weekend.

I thought it was surprisingly good except for the rubbish ending. I thought it was overly rosy considering the potentially dark finish that was built up in the final few minutes. It felt like some higher up had come in and said "woah that's a bit too gritty a ending for my liking. Lets make it more happy". Rubbish.

The ending in the movie was slightly better than in the book. But in both cases, they could have done so much more with it.

I am not going to ruin the ending, but I cannot see how it could have come out as a rosy finish, because, no matter how intelligent our fellow is, the rest of the world were vampires that were out to kill him.

It was made quite clear long before the end of the book that our hero was going to fight the vampires until either he was killed or all of the vampires were dead.

And becoming a forever-remebered legend is not a bad way to go, is it, when he chose that route himself?

It didn't need a rosy ending. Its just how they made the ending gave a feeling that they were unable to develop the story even more so they just cut it off as quickly as they could.

I also thought it was a suitable ending, considering he was convinced there was no one else left alive, and the survivors colony didn't exist.

I watched the movie "I am Legend" today, and I must say that I far prefer the novel.

Good things about the movie:
The depiction of an empty New York was excellent, and that was worth the price of admission itself. Seeing the bridges collapsed, the animals taking over, the abandoned cars and so forth was the best part of the movie, I thought. I enjoyed how the movie explored the loneliness and isolation that Robert Neville experienced, and how it discussed some scientific explanations for vampirism. The idea of using an antivirus to cure vampires was quite good. The movie also managed to show some aspects of Robert Neville's life far better than the book, such as the lockup system, and so forth.

What I did not like:
Although the movie had some scary moments in it, I thought these were usually the cheap "out of nowhere surprise" type of scare, such as the lion attacking the deer, and so forth. It also removed most of my favourite aspects of Richard Matheson's novel, such as seeing Robert Neville change from a character that merely huddles out of sight, to a merciless vampire killer. such as scientific explanations for vampires. The reason behind the woman finding out how to meet Robert seems far too cheap an explanation.

However, I far prefer the novelisation.
