I dislike the EU and I intensely resent US monitoring of my life in Europe

a British friend of mine told me that the English Government monitors all phone calls and internet useage? Talk about big brother watching. Point is I agree the Government needs to stop being so nosey and leave us alone!

Yep, the UK really is turning into a Big Brother Police State, just give it more time. However, unfortunately I believe the same is happening in the US, I mean correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the USA PATRIOT Act permit the Federal Government to wiretap US CItizens and read their e-mails?

Huh? Are you saying that you believe the UK/EU/US' invasion of privacy is a good thing or something?
It is my understanding, based upon what Reverend Rick posted, that he means when we agree with the reason government uses its power, we tend to look the other way, hell some will sing the praises of it from the roof tops.
But when we disagree with the reason government uses its power, we whine and cry.

Thus the double edged sword.

That was the plan - a giant communications database to monitor every phone call, website visit, email transaction and travel information on every citizen in the country. The project was scaled back slightly due to public outrage at the intrusiveness and expense and statements made by members of the intelligence community regarding the complete uselessness of the idea. It would have been like building a haystack in the hope of finding a needle inside, rather than just browsing around for a needle supplier on the internet.

Labour was utterly beguiled by the manufacturers of biometric, data collection and data sharing technology and kicked off all manner of invasive nonsense (mandatory biometric ID cards, DNA databases with no limit on collection or retention, CTV cameras on every street corner, etc) in their long and sordid love affair. Much of it may be dropped by the Conservatives, which could be the one positive achievement they will ever produce. I don't know whether it's worth the incredible pain and suffering that will be caused by their indiscriminate 20 % cuts to public services and their liquidation of public assets to the private sector.

I also agree the government should stop being so nosy. I try to be somewhat cautious with my personal information online because it is all the rage now in most Western countries for governments and the private sector to compile detailed files on everybody without our knowledge or consent.

The UK's complete disregard for privacy was one of the reasons I chose to come home to Canada. Now if we can only rid ourselves of these godawful conservatives...

The data was possibly handed over under intense political pressure from the US, perhaps our EU ministers were reluctant to simply pass them over but when the worlds only superpower come asking for something it usually gets it. Remember it will only be interested about democracy and civil issues within its own borders.

Power is a double edged sword. When the power is used for something we approve of, we generally look the other way.

Then perhaps we should be more critical of what meets our approval.

The US takes the European Data Equal if the EU says yes or no...

Never Heard from the Big Echolon Base near Frankurt Main??

What do you think they do there, searching Terrorists? They are only the new Excuse since the east is no real enemy any more...

And EU Parlament is voted. Equal if you are going to Vote or Not, there are enough people in Europe who do....
