I don't support prop 8...

There. I've said it. ;)

What i would like to know is, would that mean I won't be able to go to the temple? Or at least have a hard time getting a recommend? I plan to go thru the temple for the first time next year. So doesnt my opposition to prop 8 mean I'm going against the prophet? Just because I sustain Thomas s monson as the prophet, does that mean I have to agree with everything he says?

As said in other posts opposition to Prop 8 doesn't affect your standing in the church. It's great to hear you will be going through the temple. I think any discussions about your opposition to Prop 8 and it's relation to following the prophet would best be discussed with your bishop.

But you must also think that if you sustain the prophet that means you believe he is a prophet of God. If he is a prophet of God then that means he recieves God's will for His people. If he recieves God's will then he also tells us God's will. I think you can make the rest of the connection.

It's not just him though, it's the entire Presidency of the church and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. As for temple recoomend status, that is between you and your bishop/stake president.

As far as people who also voted against prop 8, they are still going to bash you for being mormon. the question is are you going to stand behing your leaders and defend them? or continue to disagree with what they say and denounce them in that fashion?

Hi Katya,

The Church's invovlement in Prop. 8 is political. It is not religious. I hope you noted on these boards several Mormons who share your view. If you've considered the issue and come to a conclusion you are comfortable with that is sufficient, I would think.

Katya,
Congratulations on going through the Temple. I agree with what Katzpur said. If you are comfortable with your view on Prop 8, then that should suffice. I support Prop 8, but I have come to the defense of members who I felt were getting a bad rap for not supporting Prop 8. Joseph Smith taught that we are to think for ourselves and take our personal views before the Lord for counsel.

Only God can look on the heart. I love all my LDS brothers and sisters as well as others who do not share my views on Prop 8 or other political issues. We may disagree, but we must continue on in love and harmony together, without malice and contention. I am no perfectionist in this arena for sure. But I want to say that If I have offended any who post on the LDS board or elsewhere on the forum, I have never meant any statement I have made to be a personal attack. I sometimes lose it, but I try to keep perspective.

Katya, you are my fellow sister in the Gospel. Let us all stand together as saints for the common good of all our brothers and sisters in the Gospel and those that are outside it.

Those who desecrate our houses of worship and Temples, will face judgement by God. Let us keep our actions civil and discussions honest. We need not join the lunatic fringe of any side of this issue in assaulting person or property. That is what the adversary wants. BTW I wouldn't want to face the Tongan Mafia outside the LDS Temple when the protesters were there.

They are a formidable foe and big!;)

If they want to condemn me just because i'm mormon, and for no other reason, then that's their problem, and not worth my time.

I understand where the presidency is coming from and I do support them in most things. But right at this moment in time, I can't support them on prop 8.

I've wanted to go to the temple for about 10 years now. Everytime i think i'm close, something comes up and I screw it up. It was why I decided to move back home to nz. with the support of my family, I know I can do it this time.

Sorry, non-Mormon butting in, but no-one seems to have mentioned that when Brigham Young was Prophet he said several things that, today, the LDS put down to his personal opinion and not the will/opinion of God.
Could not people in the future look back at the current Prophet's statements about Prop 8 in a similar vein?

I honestly wish you the best with being able to go to the temple. The Lord knows the desires of our hearts and he will help you prepare.

I myself have been waiting for my wife to be ready so that we can go through the temple for the first time together, otherwise i would have gone through myself about a year ago.
