I finally made them... my runes

They are 1" wooden rounds I got from a craft store. I used a wood burner I got there. I did them free-hand, as if you can't tell, but I think they're actually better being imperfect. I had to re-do a couple of them a couple of times. Ironically, jera gave me the most trouble... "success"? Someone was having fun with me. o_O I "blooded" the back of them by sticking my finger with a lancet and putting a drop of blood. Now they have some of my essence. I have a little wooden box for them, and put them on the altar.

That is awesome bro, I want to try wood burning a set now. :) I have been working with the runes more and more lately and had dreams of Dagaz last night - woke up to see it was "rune of the day" on that app I've been checking out. In my dream I told some person I was focusing on it and blabbering on what it symbolizes until I woke up. Wyrd stuff :)

I haven't done very much with the runes. Today was the first time in a few weeks I drew them. I drew berkano, mannaz and laguz. According to Tyriel's interpretations at Rune Secrets | Rune Meaning – Elder Futhark they indicate growth and self-discovery going on. I have Edred Thorsson's Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic, but I've only flipped through it so far. I also did a small plaque with Thorr vigi in runes. It's sitting on the altar.

It takes a while to get used to the wood burner, or at least I think so. Mine is a cheapy ($16.99) with a couple of tips. I was really amazed that I did the runes free-hand and on such small pieces. I hate to say it, but I'm kind of proud. :D I was about to burn Thorr vigi into the handle of the hammer, but I had 2nd thoughts. I'm not confident enough yet. If I muck it up there's no going back. It burns too deeply to sand it off. But I did the little plaque by penciling the runes first. I think once I get comfortable with writing the rune shapes I'll try the handle.

Perfection is the domain of committee commercialization. These are imperfect, and thus wholly unique. There are no Runes like these in all the worlds. They are yours, and thus have power.

Exactly how I look at it now. Even the little colored gemstones I have are not perfect in shape of the stones or the runes. The only reason I tossed the few I mucked up is because they were really bad. :D

A lot of my new and pretty dang perfect things, I like to put a scuff or scratch on them to get out of the way and focus on the real important stuff :)

It's my best way to stop any OCD-ishness. I would have to find it but I think it's actually an old custom. Of course if it's straight up art alone, probably different animal.

I think you did a great job though.

Thanks. :)

I'm the same way about something being either pristine, or having some imperfections. If something like a guitar gets a ding, I curse and whine about it for a while then I settle into "oh well, it's got character". :p

They weren't really that hard. It seemed intimidating, but that's just my anxiety. You hold the wood burner like a pencil and just draw or write. Though depending on the wood grain, you won't get straight lines. The only other thing I was really careful about was not to burn my fingers holding such a small item. The tip gets to 950°F.

Very cool! I do not read runes, but my boyfriend is very skilled at interpreting them, so I made a set of my own a while back. For mine, I took some of those clear decorational pebbles that they sell at the craft store, and just painted on the runes themselves. I think it is neat that you did the wood burner thing! Crafted objects take on a personality when you invest much of yourself in them.
