I need to get another car

I got rear-ended by an uninsured driver Thursday night and I am still angry, but what can I do? It is against the law to drive without insurance in this state but the officer did not even give him the $500 ticket he should have gotten because he gave her a sob story about how he was homeless. Fortunately I have good insurance and only a $250 deductible but my car was considered a total loss so the insurance won’t pay to repair it. Rather they will pay me whatever the market value of the vehicle is but I don’t know yet what that will be and I don’t know if that will be enough to buy another vehicle like the one I have. It is still perfectly drivable so I can drive it till I decide what to do.

A similar thing happened to me in 2015 when I had an accident that was not my fault. My 1995 Honda Odyssey was totaled by the insurance so I had to buy another vehicle and that is the one that just got rear-ended. I ended up with a 1999 Honda CR-V EX, which has been a better vehicle than I had before for my purposes so I am hoping I will be able to do that again in order to counterbalance all the hassle I will have to go through to get another vehicle.

The Honda CR-V EX is not easy to come by where I live. The only one I have seen that is in very good condition is a long drive from here and I don’t drive on the freeway anymore so the only way I could get it is if the owner will deliver it to me and I pay him.

I have enough money to buy a newer car or even a new car but I have no interest in a newer car. I just need a car to get around since I live far out in the country and I need a SUV since I have to cart around a lot of food for cats and birds and other wild animals that I feed. Other than grocery shopping and medical appointments I never go anywhere.

I am so angry that this happened. I hate car shopping!

Whenever I need a new vehicle, I just hit up craigslist for used cars and take the first thing that fits the bill(and is in the desired price range).

Sorry that happened to you. Vehicles are a pain.

You picked a bad time to need a new used car, prices are through the roof.

Wouldn't an old pick-up truck be cheaper than an SUV?
You must be hauling around an awful lot of food, if it won't all fit in a sedan.

Yes, that is what I also do. I have gotten all my vehicles on Craigslist. I have never bought a car from a dealer and I never bought a new car. I have been lucky so far but it took forever to find the CRV I got locally.

Why do you think that is the case?

I don't want a truck or a sedan. Yes, I do buy a lot of bird food, cat food and dog food. Our other car is a 1986 Honda Prelude and all the stuff I buy won't fit in there. The CRV is just the right size for driving and shopping, not too big and not too small.

I'm sorry to hear you got rear ended @Trailblazer I hope everyone is safe.

The road is unfortunately a dangerous place, particularly while we still have human drivers behind the wheel.

Good luck finding a car that suits you.

I hope it all finds a good solution for you Susan. I also hate car hunting, so all the best with that.

We got a later model dual cab Ute, as we have 500km and 600km drives to the next bigger towns.

There is a lot of good SUV's available.

Regards Tony

Actually, what they give you is negotiable. You can demand that they give you a car in the same condition as you had, (if I am not mistaken) and then negotiate or "I will get a lawyer". Then they really negotiate.

I'm glad you are fine.

That is good to hear. I never take these things sitting down. Since I foresaw there might be an issue with the insurance adjuster I called Legal Shield since I am a member and can get free legal advice and they will be calling me on Monday. It never hurts to have information so I will be ready. I am also going to ask if I can get the car repaired if I can find a collision shop who will repair it for less but I doubt they will go for that.

I'm glad to hear you are not injured.

"Repair" can be a slippery term. I've seen perfectly fine cars from a mechanical sense that have a large dent somewhere. How important is a good body to you? If you could live with a large dent assuming that's possible and desirable, you might try to negotiate with the insurance company where they give you cash and you give them a document that you are satisfied and promise not to sue.

Thanks for the website. I could live with the damage but since I have insurance and only a $250 deductible I either want it repaired or I want another CRV that is equivalent.

The last time this happened in 2015 the car was not drivable because the damage was to the front and the windshield was broken, so I had to get another car. As I recall, I negotiated with the insurance company after they totaled it and they said I could have it repaired, but since the damage was to the front end I was worried there could be mechanical damage so I took the monetary settlement and bought the CRV I have now.

I'm going to wait and see what the insurance company offers me and then I will make a decision. If there is no mechanical damage it would just be easier to have the body damage repaired then to get another CRV but it all depends upon how much money they offer me.

It would be nice to get another CRV that has even less mileage but those are rare. Mine had about 190 but most 1999 CRVs have a lot more miles on them than that. I found a 2004 CRV with 130 up in Seattle for $3000 but unfortunately it is a manual transmission and I don't want to go back to driving a stick. There is a very nice 1997 CRV with 190 down in Portland for 4000 so if I can get that much from the insurance I might consider that even though that is a lot for a 1997.

You think he's lying? How can you tell? What's that to you, anyway? It has nothing to with your situation which I know is bad because perhaps it triggers your PTSD. Or does it? How is that going?

I do not care if he was lying about being homeless, it was still a sob story. So do you think it is okay for him to be driving with no insurance and slam into me, leaving me to deal with all the problems I have now? Of course it triggered my PTSD but that is the least of it. Now because of his carelessness I have to buy another car when I was happy with that car.

I hope my insurance company goes after him for what they are going to have to pay out. The man in the collision center told me that is what insurance companies do. Baha'u'llah did not turn a blind eye to injustice so why should I? People need to pay for their mistakes. I would be paying if it had been my fault with a hike in my insurance rates.

I thought we were not to judge other people. You seem to thinking only about yourself as far as him having insurance. What about the possible poor plight of this person? Mercy is a virtue, remember.

This is what I expect to hear from a Baha'i, but I do judge him and I don't feel sorry for him.
I guess I should have never become a Baha'i because I do not have the necessary virtues.
But I do not feel guilty about it anymore because I am tired of trying to be something I am not.

If the bashed-up vehicle is still perfectly drivable, would it be worth paying for repairs yourself, and keeping it? Obviously it depends on age/condition, and what other work might need to be done over the next few years.
