People's real feelings come out under intense emotion. People might consciously believe they are not racist but if anger causes them to utter racist statements, they are not perfect.

Saying something improper doesn't certify you as a racist, as I've mentioned previously. This is lost on many people, but it's not true. Your worldview doesn't change because you spat out some angry words or made off-color jokes. It literally means nothing. People have a tendency to go for the low-hanging fruit when insulting someone that they barely know, but it's obviously not the same thing as them having a racist viewpoint. If you're "racist" only because a black guy down the street kicked your dog, you're not racist, it was just reactionary. This is mostly what people are misclassifying as justification for the existence of racism, but that's not racism. Racism is people making their decisions in their relations with people of other color BASED purely on that color. The slurs aren't nice, but they're not actually racist in and of themselves.

Yes I agree - things are getting better. The difference between the late 1960's and today is notable as I know from living both. The path is not yet done. We have yet to achieve equality where skin color is no more notable than eye color.

You can never have equality because people aren't equal. It has nothing to do with skin color though. Some people are dumber or smarter than others, some are boring or funny, some are nice or mean, or any other extended list of good and bad qualities you want to think about. Equality doesn't happen unless it's tyrannically enforced on people, and even then, it's pretending. The enforcers think they're doing it, but people go back to the old pillars of merit, value, and personality. That's really the world we're in... If you're the best at something, no one cares about your skin color... If you're the nicest, no one cares about your skin color. If you help them in some way, no one cares about your skin color. It's rarely in the case in the rest of the world, and people should count their lucky stars the fate lottery dropped them off here.
