I shall not be moved

Wow... I have never researched this although I have been known to hum this song.

Sounds like I have been in good company.

YouTube - Elvis Presley I Shall Not Be Moved

YouTube - i shall not be moved - Mississippi John Hurt

I still hum this but I probably was first exposed when I was 9... there is a lot to say in terms of reason and logic...

But its an emotional song for a kid. Yes or no? A tree by the water is going no where correct? I mean do trees die? (As a kid I had no idea... I think I thought that trees would live forever unless we cut em down... Now thats pretty honest as I dont remember how as a 9 year old I thought about the mortality of trees hehe)

It is not the only song I still idly hum and get annoyed with myself for doing so... but still...

Have I have been brainwashed into these songs and still somehow ended up being an atheist?

I don't see a contradiction in liking religiously themed art, be it music or otherwise, and being an atheist.
For instance, I have no problems admiring the art and craftsmanship of cathedrals even if I don't believe in what the buildings themselves stand for.

You have not been brainwashed!

After recognizing that I'm just an atheist I still love listening to these songs....

Because let's face it. This music in this song is representative of the roots of the majority of modern music. Well that and this song has Mariead singing. I adore her.

That and this song.

And many other songs of the thankfully non-New Age musical style but true traditional Celtic/Gaelic style are heavily wrapped in spiritual themes. Because they are beautiful is why I listen to them.

And as I already stated much of the modern music in rock, rap, rhythm and blues, blues, hip/hop, etc. are entrenched in the musical traditions taken from folk and "common" European and African traditional which are steeped in religious themes. Many of these religious themes from the common folk, or folk traditions, differ in my opinion from the aristocratic and dogmatic religious music we find in traditional evangelical, non-black Southern ones, and the Western tradition of classical music. The personal experience of the hard life among common folk.

Yeah. I probably said more there than I should have.

I'm an atheist and I like a lot of the late 90's early 2000's Christian metal scene...

As I Lay Dying's Beneath the Encasing of Ashes and Frail Words Collapse... (I bet even you non-scene noobs have heard some AILD by now, since they've been in some commercials and stuff. I was listening to them when you were in musical diapers ;) lol jk)

This Runs Through, Sainai Beach, pretty much everything on Facedown Records (a Christian metal/punk label), pretty much everything on the original Trustkill roster, pretty much everything on the original Tooth & Nails (later Solid State Records) roster, all of these Christian labels...

This stuff rocked, it still rocks, I don't care that it's Christian. Good stuff is good stuff!

I've always loved the soundtrack for "Brother Where Art Thou". Excellent movie with a lot of nice songs, many of which have a religious tone and message.

Also, I've always been a huge fan of Johnny Cash. I mean, how could I not be. :D

I was gonna post the Soggy Bottom Boys!

The majority of my favorite Johnny songs come from his more religiously themed albums. Johnny is just amazing all around.

This song always gives me the shivers when I hear it.
