There's been an realignment between the two parties. The Democratic party is now the party of affluent upper class college educated Americans, whereas middle class and working class who do not hold college degrees are moving strongly towards the Republican Party. The Democratic Party is the party of elitism and the Republican Party under Trump is the party of populism now. I never thought this would happen, myself. I used to vote Democrat and voted for Bernie Sanders in the primary. Now I cannot envision myself ever voting for a Democratic for a state or federal election again, unless they drastically changed. They do not uphold my interests.
The Democratic Party Realignment That Empowered Trump
Since the 1970s, the Democratic Party has realigned—a shift that might have cost Kamala Harris the White House.time.com
The D party has certainly lost it's way, has been doing so for sometime (I registered as independent 20 years ago). Their message this election cycle was (mostly) tone deaf for the working class.
That said, they are still the ones who fight for an increase in the minimum wage, worker health/safety, assistance to single mothers and the poor, etc., etc. The R party does not care about any of that and in fact are hostile to most of it.
IMHO, many who are embracing the R party will regret their decision. Especially if you voted R and care even a little bit about the environment.
I do like that the the Rs are pro-life and (under Trump at least - not your traditional R by any stretch of the imagination) much more adverse to getting us entangled in stupid foreign wars. A huge shift from the warmongers Bush, Cheney, etc.
