I would just like to say this...

I thought they were arguing against respecting beliefs... not whether or not someone has a right to think what they want. Obviously they have that right... but that doesn't mean I have to respect it.

Think is, i never said anyone had to respect anothers belief. Although respecting them is another thing. I feel some people unneccessarily call names and say hurtful things simply because they dont believe the same. Nothing wrong with one believing im crazy for believing in Jesus Christ. But does that mean they have to call me stupid?

Not saying anyone has. Just giving an example.

Well... calling you stupid is a personal remark, and is against forum rules(and just plain rude ). But calling the idea stupid... that's perfectly fine.

I fully agree. Thats what i was referring when i said respecting one's right to believe and not insulting or being disrespectful. Thats all i was driving at, which i saw is what the tw was saying.

That’s not exactly saying much- it’s like saying we all have the right to be jaw-droppingly stupid and arrive at opinions with no compelling reason to do so. Sure.

We may have the right to form our own opinions, but we don’t have the right to form our own facts independent of the evidence. And once those opinions are formed, we all have the right to mercilessly critique and disrespect those ideas arrived at falsely or with little if any rationalization. I may respect the right of people to choose a belief freely, but I certainly don’t respect every opinion on “origins, deity's, Gods, beliefs, everything.” Some beliefs are just plain harmful, worthless and ignorant. If your faith requires the denial of a 4.5+ billion year old earth or the undeniable consequences of changes in alleles over deep time, then I not only have no respect for your opinion I think you’re an idiot and likely a liar. I can’t respect lazy arguments that irrationally arrive at a bigoted stance against homosexuals, women or minorities or whatever- I disrespect unsubstantiated arguments that arrive at faulty conclusions. Not only is there much just begging to be disrespected, I also think many opinions deserve to be mocked and exposed as the nonsense they are so others may see why their beliefs are not respected.

I'll toast an iced tea to that.
That's your opinion...I respect that

You respect opinions that you find transparently stupid? Why?
I believe he's saying he respects the fact that we all have the right to believe as we do.
Oh. Thanks. I thought he was saying ...
I respect each and every one of your opinions ...
But perhaps he misspoke. That aside, "saying he respects the fact that we all have the right to believe as we do" is itself an interesting construct, and one we probably all use. But when I say that I respect your right to believe as you do, I am saying very little about you or your beliefs. What I'm really seeking to convey is that I do not believe others have the right to coerce you to believe otherwise, and I hold this position concurrently with the believe that, in the words of Martin Luther King, "[we] have a moral responsibility to be intelligent."
