Scott great to see you.....
Thanks, my friend.... I can't be on as much lately... you are all in my thoughts and prayers.
What about something you dislike about a religion you like. LIke in my example. If I dislike the Catholic sex scandles of recent you must really hate it because it certainly affects you on more levels than it does me. Don't you just want to throttle those some of those guys?
Well, yes.... but sex scandals, fanatic bombers, etc. have nothing to do with the practice of their religion. These sinful behaviors are part of the fallen nature of humanity, not because of what they believe.... in fact, most of these evils are CONTRARY to the religious teaching these people identify themselves with.

Most, if not all, religions I have run in to are peaceful and loving by nature.... when individuals sin, I know that it's hard sometimes not to lump them up with their faith and pronounce it as a cause of the evil.
For me I would say I dislike atheists who are bullies and I dislike UU's who wave the UU flag but don't bother to study religion..though I have never met a UU like that yet.....
I dislike bullies as well.... but again, it is not atheism that makes them bullies any more than being Catholic makes someone pleasant to be around. Individuality comes in all shapes, sizes, good and bad.... I think one of my biggest beefs with the world is that many people try to shape their humanity by association with a group (which is usefull in most cases) and use that association as an excuse for their behavior.

Glad you could pop in Scott. Good to read from you.

I think we should be respectful towards others *even* when they are not showing respect to us. My behavior is not contingent on how someone treats me. I don't need to be rude, just because someone else is.
I am the same way. carrdero and I are together and we have different views. I respect his belief and he respects mine. If he doesn't show respect (unlikely) I still give respect.

I was taught that it's better to give then to receive no matter what it is.

Well my neighbors are Hindu but I still give them Christmas presents. They don't mind! They are such nice people! They let me and my baby stay at their house when I accidentally locked myself out.

So what if I don't like their religion? They're still human beings, and there's probably lots of things that we could learn from one another. And conversely, there'll probably be many things in my philosophy of life that they don't like.

I'd treat them as fellow humans (meaning "kindly"). If they are JW's or Mormons proselytizing at my door (the only conceivable alternatives in Sweden), I would probably be rather explicit in telling them where I think they are wrong.

If they were bleeding in front of my house, I wouldn't care if they were green or striped or whatever, and I wouldn't ask what they believed in, but I'd try to help them. And I don't hit people. The very few times I was hit when I was a minor, I didn't hit back. And I don't think that being rude ever will accomplish anything positive.

Your Christmas presents are very thoughtful, johnnys, but beware -- they might repay the favor on Holi!

I don't feel that we're being very kind towards the aliens...

:D

The way I treat people seldom has anything to do with their religion.

just cause they are of a faith i don't particularly care for doesn't mean i shouldn't be nice or polite to them....
good rule of thumb...don't hate someone because of a faith, race, ethnicity, etc.
hate them because they are an @$$hole

Be nice or be mean?
Mind your own business or intervene and speak your mind?

Go!
I generally treat people pretty much the same way they treat me. I am honestly not trying to play the role of the victim, but as a Mormon, I've definitely seen my share of very rude people. Most of these types eventually learn that this kitty has claws! I'd much rather have a good relationship with people of other faiths, though. After all, we're all just doing our best with the knowledge we've got. I will say one thing about myself, though -- I don't go looking for fights. On those rare occasions where I've really gotten nasty (and believe me, I can be pretty vicious), it's inevitably because someone has just ridiculed my beliefs one too many times. Right now, I'm not seeing that kind of thing happening on this board. I am still pretty much awestruck at how civil everybody here is to one another. It's a wonderful change from some of the boards I've posted on in the past.

God bless,
Kathryn
